Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen addressed unsolicited scrutiny of her appearance in a public post on Instagram on Monday, 24 August 2026. The statement followed her return from an official visit to Kyiv, where air raid sirens sounded as her delegation departed the Ukrainian capital. Immediately upon returning home to Denmark, the 48-year-old head of government received a direct message from a plastic surgeon offering to perform a cosmetic procedure on her face. The doctor proposed to fix a spot located on her nose. Frederiksen published a screenshot of the doctor's unsolicited proposal on social media while concealing the sender's identity, accompanied by her direct written refusal.

Scrutiny of female public figures

Frederiksen noted that the surgeon's message represented an ongoing experience with superficial scrutiny throughout her career in public office. The Danish leader explained that public figures, particularly women, are regularly subjected to critical comments concerning physical traits rather than their political actions. Over several years, messages sent to her social media accounts have repeatedly criticized her teeth, characterized her hair as thin, and labeled a mark on her nose as an unsightly wart. Other correspondents have offered unsolicited recommendations urging her to receive Botox injections. Frederiksen acknowledged that these persistent beauty suggestions made her feel indignant and irritated.

I've lost count of how many messages I've received over the years about my appearance. Especially that I have ugly teeth and thin hair. That I have an ugly 'wart' on my nose and well-meaning advice to get some Botox.

In her post, Frederiksen emphasized that she deliberately refrains from commenting on the physical appearance of others and expects similar standards regarding her own body. She wrote that she remains completely satisfied with her physical appearance as a woman approaching the age of 50. While confirming that she welcomes continued correspondence from the public on serious issues, she requested that citizens direct their messages toward meaningful political matters rather than her facial features. The prime minister concluded her post with words of solidarity for other women navigating daily remarks about their physical looks.
