
France records its first 'fire cloud' as Gironde wildfire destroys 420 sq km and forces 220,000 evacuations
A wildfire in France's Gironde region has produced the country's first documented pyrocumulonimbus cloud, a rare thunderstorm-like formation that can generate its own lightning and accelerate the blaze.
A large wildfire burning in southwestern France since 22 July has produced the country's first officially documented pyrocumulonimbus cloud, a rare and dangerous atmospheric phenomenon that can intensify the blaze it rises from. The fire, near the commune of Saumos in the Gironde department, has already destroyed more than 420 square kilometres of forest and vegetation, damaged over 240 homes, and led to the evacuation of approximately 220,000 people. Neighbouring Spain is also battling severe wildfires, and experts warn that the appearance of a pyroCb cloud marks a dangerous escalation.
What a pyroCb cloud is
Pyrocumulonimbus clouds, often called fire clouds, are giant thunderstorm-like formations born directly from the extreme heat of a massive wildfire. When a fire releases enough energy, a column of hot air, smoke, ash and water vapour rises rapidly. At high altitude the air cools, moisture condenses, and a cloud takes shape. If the fire is intense enough, the cloud can reach heights of 10 to 15 kilometres, punching into the stratosphere and covering up to 10,000 cubic kilometres of the atmosphere. NASA has described them as the "fire-breathing dragons of clouds."
It's a complete storm that forms inside the fire plume. These things cover up to about 10,000 cubic kilometres of atmosphere, so they have a big impact.
How the cloud feeds the fire
Once formed, a pyroCb cloud stops being merely a consequence of the fire and becomes a driver of its behaviour. The storm produces powerful, erratic winds that can push flames in unexpected directions, fragment the fire front, or accelerate its advance. More dangerously, the cloud generates its own lightning. Those strikes can hit dry vegetation well outside the existing fire perimeter, igniting new spot fires kilometres away. Firefighters on the ground face rapidly shifting conditions that make their work far more hazardous.
The rise in ground temperature at the centre of the fire is so extreme that the intense heat rises as a column, meeting cooler air masses above. This contact gives birth to a fire cloud, unfortunately one lacking moisture. Inside the cloud, lightning forms, which strikes the embers on the ground and feeds the fire even more... You hear a noise, a rumble.
A first for France
The fire near Saumos ignited on 22 July. Two days later, on 24 July, authorities confirmed the formation of a pyroCb cloud above the blaze, the first such event officially documented in France. The cloud dissipated temporarily during the night as humidity increased, then reappeared on multiple subsequent occasions. Rick McRae, an associate professor at the University of New South Wales bushfire research group and a former senior fire manager with 30 years of experience, said the country is now confronting a phenomenon it had only studied from afar.
It's the first time France has had to explicitly consider the concept of pyroCb. The question is whether one will come Tuesday, Wednesday, this week.

They remain rare in Europe, but specialists say the conditions that produce them, prolonged drought, record heatwaves and dry, windy weather, are becoming more common as the climate crisis deepens. McRae stressed that the trend is not only about rising temperatures but about broader climatic shifts that make fire behaviour harder to predict and control.
The cloud is a confirmation that the fire is very dangerous. It is a clear signal that evacuations are necessary.
With the Gironde fire still active and heatwave conditions persisting, meteorologists and fire services remain on alert for further pyroCb development.
