The two-time defending Olympic champions recorded set victories of 25-16, 25-19, and 25-19 in the afternoon fixture scheduled at 15:00. This straight-sets outcome followed a round-of-16 win over Portugal two days earlier on Sunday, 20 September. Competing in a sparsely populated arena in the Bulgarian capital, the French squad took command midway through each set, neutralizing the Romanian attack and securing passage to the tournament's final four in Italy.

Reversing the group-stage setback

The quarter-final result marked a swift reversal of France's earlier meeting with Romania during pool play. In that group encounter, the Romanian team, ranked 22nd in the FIVB world rankings, overturned a two-set deficit to defeat France 3-2 after the French team had already secured qualification for the knockout stage. Romania followed that upset by defeating Ukraine to secure their place among the tournament's top eight teams, supported by 21-year-old Cristian Chitigoi, who scored 11 points in the competition. Facing the same opponent on Tuesday, head coach Andrea Giani ensured no repeat collapse, replicating the 3-0 quarter-final sweep France earned against Romania at the 2023 European Championship.

The French lineup featured several rising players who stepped forward during an international summer without veteran Olympic stars like Earvin Ngapeth and Jean Patry, who opted for post-Olympic rest. Opposite hitter Théo Faure finished as the match's top scorer with 19 points, leading the French attack alongside creative offensive contributions from Mathis Henno.
