
France logs warmest summer since 1900 with 53 heatwave days as eco-anxiety rises 20%

Temperature records and heatwave duration

The findings confirmed that summer 2026 was the warmest in France since official records began in 1900. Average temperatures exceeded previous seasonal records by nearly 1 °C. The country endured a total of 53 heatwave days distributed across three distinct heatwave periods between June and August. During these spells, weather stations logged temperatures exceeding 40 °C on 178 occasions across the territory. Neighbouring countries also experienced matching conditions, with meteorological agencies in the United Kingdom and Belgium confirming their warmest summers on record.
Meteorological alerts and wildfire impact
The heatwaves began early in the season, triggering high-level weather alerts across metropolitan departments. At the height of the first intense heat period in late June, 72 departments were placed simultaneously under red heatwave vigilance. Over the entire three-month meteorological summer, every mainland department reached orange vigilance, while 73 departments triggered red vigilance at least once. A second heatwave extending from late July into August lasted 23 consecutive days, matching the duration record set in 1983. Severe drought conditions combined with high temperatures to intensify wildfires, including large blazes in the Gironde department. By late August, forest fires across France had burned six times more surface area than the 20-year average.

Government response and adaptation plans
Following the seasonal review, Minister for Ecological Transition and Biodiversity Monique Barbut addressed the policy implications alongside Météo-France chief executive Virginie Schwarz. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu instructed Barbut in late July to accelerate the implementation of the National Adaptation Plan for Climate Change. Barbut announced that the government will present detailed conclusions and a five-year financing plan before the end of September. Planned short-term initiatives include installing window shutters and ceiling fans in schools before next summer, along with improving access routes for firefighters in vulnerable forests by mid-September.
The summer of 2026 will remain in history, but the question we must ask ourselves now is how it will remain. As the first in a long series that will continue to break records. Or as a moment that allowed us to rise to the challenges of adaptation and mitigation.
Rising eco-anxiety across the population
A separate study released on 3 September by Obseca, France's first eco-anxiety observatory, tracked the psychological impact of escalating temperatures. The study found that eco-anxiety increased by 20% between 2024 and 2026. Approximately 15.1 million French citizens now fall into the moderate or strong eco-anxiety categories, up from 12.5 million two years earlier. The 15 to 24 age bracket exhibited the highest rates of distress, reporting significantly higher levels than individuals aged 35 to 64. Among occupational groups, senior executives recorded the highest proportion of high anxiety at 31%, whereas the sample of retirees recorded 0%. While regional and overall gender score disparities disappeared between 2024 and 2026, men still accounted for 54% of very strong cases and 70% of individuals facing psychopathological risk.
I have 25-year-olds as well as 60-year-old grandmothers. This is not an irrational fear. We cannot eliminate climate disruption to treat eco-anxious people. That is the real problem.
