Météo-France issues orange heatwave alert for five southern departments as temperatures approach 40°C

Météo-France announced on Thursday, 3 September 2026, during its 16:00 bulletin that five departments in southern France will enter an orange heatwave alert. The administrative departments affected by the alert are Ardèche, Aude, Drôme, Gard, and Hérault. The alert officially begins on Friday, 4 September 2026, at 12:00 local time, as atmospheric conditions build upon high temperatures that have developed across the country since the start of the week. Alongside the five departments designated for orange vigilance, ten additional departments across the south were placed on yellow vigilance status. Forecasters indicated that very strong heat will establish itself across the southern half of the country, with maximum daytime temperatures rising sharply on Friday afternoon despite the conclusion of the traditional summer holiday period.

The maximums will rise sharply on Friday afternoon in the southern half, particularly in the South-West and the Rhône valley, with 36 to 38°C expected.

Regional temperature forecasts across France

Daytime temperatures on Friday afternoon are projected to reach between 36°C and 38°C across the South-West and throughout the Rhône valley. Thermometers are forecast to register peaks of 39°C locally in the interior of Languedoc, southern Aquitaine, and broader areas of Occitanie, presenting warmth described by the meteorological service as unprecedented for September in several localities. Across other regions in the southern half of the country, maximum temperatures will remain between 30°C and 33°C. The northern half of France is expected to stay largely insulated from the most intense heat, with maximum readings remaining below 35°C throughout the period. Météo-France expects several monthly heat records for September to be matched or exceeded in Occitanie, Languedoc, and western Provence before the end of the week.

Weekend progression and overnight conditions

The elevated temperatures will persist across the southern half of the country through at least Sunday, maintaining intense conditions in the South-East, Occitanie, the Rhône valley, and Provence. On Saturday, local temperatures in the interior of Languedoc are forecast to cross the 40°C threshold as heat builds further over the weekend. Overnight minimum temperatures between Friday and Saturday are projected to hold between 19°C and 23°C in Mediterranean regions. In contrast, overnight lows in the South-West are expected to remain below 20°C in most locations, which justified keeping those departments on yellow vigilance rather than advancing them to orange status. Conditions are forecast to ease on Monday, 7 September 2026, as incoming oceanic weather disturbances move in and lower temperatures across the affected southern departments.

Climate patterns and summer heatwave context

The early September weather system represents the fifth distinct heatwave to affect France since May 2026, arriving after a summer marked by extended heat and wildfire activity. The meteorological summer, defined as the three-month period from June through August 2026, recorded a total of 53 heatwave days across the country. An intense wave occurred in late June, while a subsequent heatwave running from late July into August lasted 23 days, equaling the longest heatwave duration on record in France established in 1983. A comparable late-season heatwave previously affected the country from 3 to 11 September 2023. Météo-France observed that late-season temperature spikes in September are not unusual in France, but have become more probable and more intense as a result of global climate change.
