A 17-year-old passenger died after the Volkswagen he was riding in, driven by an unlicensed and intoxicated 17-year-old, rolled over on a forest road in Mściszewice, northern Poland. Four of the nine occupants were riding on the vehicle's roof at the time.
The crash
On the night of Friday into Saturday, shortly after midnight, a Volkswagen passenger car carrying nine people rolled over on a forest road in Mściszewice, Pomerania region. Police in Kartuzy reported that the 17-year-old driver, who had no driving licence and had consumed alcohol, veered off the road to the right shoulder and then into a roadside ditch, causing the vehicle to overturn.
The most detailed police account, released by the Kartuzy District Police, described the sequence. "Preliminary findings indicate that the 17-year-old Volkswagen driver, without a licence and under the influence of one per mille of alcohol, driving on a forest road, for unknown reasons drove onto the right shoulder and then into a roadside ditch, where the vehicle rolled over," the statement read.
Nine occupants, four on the roof
Five people were inside the car. A further four were sitting on the roof when the vehicle crashed. All nine occupants were aged between 14 and 18, Fakt24.pl reported, citing police sources.
Nine people were travelling in the vehicle at the time of the rollover, including five inside and four sitting on its roof.
Most of the group, including minors, had been drinking alcohol earlier at a barbecue, according to information obtained by Fakt24.pl from the police. The teenagers themselves confirmed to officers how many were on board and how they had been positioned.
Victim and survivors
The 17-year-old passenger, who was among those riding on the roof, was taken to hospital unconscious with severe injuries and died despite medical intervention. The remaining eight occupants escaped without injury. The driver was detained at the scene.
A 17-year-old passenger was transported to hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries. Nothing happened to the other participants of the incident.
Investigation and legal follow-up
Police and a prosecutor carried out on-site examinations and secured evidence in the hours after the crash. The driver was taken into custody. Proceedings are under way to determine the exact cause of the rollover and to apportion responsibility. The case will also be referred to the Family Court, given the involvement of minors, Fakt24.pl noted.
Police appeal
Following the fatality, the Pomeranian police issued a public appeal aimed at parents, guardians and all road users, urging them to react when an unlicensed or intoxicated person attempts to drive. Officers stressed that every moment of inattention and recklessness can end in tragedy.
