Helicopter crash near Rio kills four, including three Colombian family members on birthday trip

A helicopter caught fire and crashed on Saturday in a remote, densely forested mountainous area of Tijuca National Park near Rio de Janeiro, killing all four people on board. Brazilian firefighters reported that the aircraft ignited for reasons that remain unknown and then plunged into the rugged terrain. The aircraft fell in a hard-to-reach, mountainous region overgrown with dense vegetation, according to Brazilian authorities. Tijuca National Park is one of the largest urban rainforests in the world, and the crash site lies near Vista Chinesa, a hilltop replica of a Chinese pagoda that ranks among Rio de Janeiro's most popular tourist viewpoints. From there, visitors admire panoramas of the city, Guanabara Bay, and the Christ the Redeemer statue.

The location, while popular with tourists, is exceptionally difficult for emergency services to reach due to the dense vegetation and mountainous terrain. Rescue teams arrived at the scene promptly and began operations immediately, but there was no help for those on board. All four people perished at the site of the crash. According to local media citing rescue workers, the victims burned in the flaming wreckage of the aircraft.

Three Colombian women and a pilot

The Colombian consulate confirmed that three of the victims were women from a single Colombian family visiting Brazil as tourists. They had travelled to Rio de Janeiro to celebrate the 15th birthday of one passenger's daughter, and the helicopter tour was part of the birthday excursion. The consulate identified the three female victims as the birthday girl's grandmother, her aunt, and her cousin. The fourth person killed was the helicopter's pilot.

The 15-year-old girl survived by chance. The helicopter could carry only three passengers at a time, so she stayed behind with her father, waiting for the next flight. The girl and her father were still at the departure point when the helicopter went down in the forested mountains nearby. That coincidence spared her from the crash that killed three of her closest relatives. The family's trip, intended as a joyful celebration of a milestone birthday, ended in a tragedy that quickly drew attention from Brazilian and international media.

Investigation and safety concerns

Investigators are now working to determine the exact cause of the crash, analysing both the technical condition of the aircraft and the weather conditions at the time of the flight. The investigation is being conducted by local Brazilian authorities together with the Colombian consulate. Brazilian officials have appealed for caution during flights over the mountainous terrain of Tijuca Park.

The crash follows another helicopter incident over Rio de Janeiro. In June, two helicopters collided over the city, killing six people, including American singer Oliver Tree and Argentine YouTuber Gaspar Prim. Rio mayor Eduardo Cavaliere wrote on the social media platform X that he had asked Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency to immediately strengthen oversight to ensure the safety of helicopter flights over the city.
