Firefighters and aerial units deploy to contain forest blaze in Fourka near Konitsa

Alert and initial response

Emergency crews were placed on high alert on Saturday afternoon, 12 September 2026, following the outbreak of a fire in a forest area near Fourka, in the municipality of Konitsa. The Fire Service Operations Centre received the initial report of the incident at approximately 17:30 local time. Response teams immediately organized a mobilization to reach the forested terrain and begin containment operations. The operational focus was established quickly to manage the active front before the blaze could spread further across the woodland.

Ground and aerial deployment

Operational deployments at the site include a dedicated force of 12 firefighters working on the ground. These personnel are supported by one specialized foot team from the 5th Special Forestry Operations Unit (EMODE), who are trained for difficult terrain interventions. In addition to the specialized ground teams, three fire engines were dispatched to the sector to deliver water and equipment support. For aerial suppression, authorities mobilized three aerial assets, cited in operational reports as aircraft or helicopters, to conduct water drops over the forest.

Municipal assistance and weather conditions

The Municipality of Konitsa joined the response effort by mobilizing heavy earthmoving machinery to support the Fire Service. This construction equipment works in coordination with the ground firefighters to aid operational access and assist with containment measures. Throughout the intervention, authorities have noted lightning activity in the surrounding area. The presence of lightning strikes is being examined as part of the operational response to the forest fire.
