A footballer's dream cut short

Faten Ben Amar El Azizi, a 20-year-old midfielder for Maghreb Atlético Tetuán, drowned while trying to swim to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Her club confirmed her death on Saturday, saying her journey "ended before reaching its destination." The young player was among at least 67 people who died in the crossing attempt, according to Spain's Interior Ministry. She had wanted to open "a new door" for her future, the club said, but the dream "ended before it began."

She was not seeking fame or adventure, but a better life and a future she believed awaited her on the other side of the border.

The club described the "high price" paid by many young people in irregular migration attempts that turn "dreams into nightmares" and "joy into tears."

The Ceuta migration surge

The tragedy unfolded during the worst migration crisis between Morocco and Spain in recent memory. Approximately 60,000 people crossed the border into Ceuta in a single 24-hour period, overwhelming Spanish authorities. Most of the dead drowned attempting the perilous sea route from Fnideq (Castillejos) to Ceuta. While Spain's Interior Ministry reported at least 67 fatalities, some media outlets cited figures as high as 84. Moroccan authorities have not released official casualty numbers, but local media reported at least 17 deaths on the Moroccan side.

Families wait for news at the border

By Saturday, the border was gradually returning to normal, but families remained gathered at the crossing, desperate for information about missing relatives. One man received a call confirming his elderly uncle's body had been found; he had attempted the swim despite his age. A woman named Karima waited for news of her husband, missing since Thursday. Others sat on a low wall along the coastal road, scanning the horizon for returning migrants and asking those who came back if they had seen their loved ones. Some women pressed their hands against the metal fence, hoping to spot a familiar silhouette.

Football community mourns

The Moroccan Union of Professional Footballers (UMFP) issued a statement expressing condolences.

The President of the UMFP, along with all members of the Union, present their sincere condolences and express their deep compassion to the family of the deceased, her loved ones, her teammates, Moghreb de Tanger and the entire Moroccan football family.

The death has plunged the sports community in Tangier into mourning, with local media remembering Faten for her dedication, work ethic, and kindness.
