Police arrest five suspects in Poland and Slovakia following fatal beating of Kraków football fan

Fatal attack on Osiedle Willowe

During the night between 20 and 21 August 2026, five assailants attacked 36-year-old Jakub, known in football fan circles as "Yankes", on Osiedle Willowe in Kraków's Nowa Huta district. The victim was an active supporter of Hutnik Kraków and a member of the sports club's boxing section. Investigators linked the five assailants to Młoda Ferajna, a hooligan group operating within the fan structures of Wisła Kraków. CCTV cameras captured the assault lasting several minutes as the victim attempted to escape before falling to the ground, where he received multiple strikes with machetes and heavy physical blows. A passerby found the unconscious man shortly after the attackers fled the scene. Emergency medical personnel arrived to provide aid, but the 36-year-old died from his injuries inside an ambulance during transport to the hospital.

Investigation and initial juvenile detention

Following the fatal assault, the Provincial Police Commander in Kraków formed a specialized investigative team composed of officers from the provincial and municipal headquarters, the Central Investigation Bureau of Police (CBŚP), and the Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime (CBZC). Investigators issued public appeals for information, prompting local residents to submit dozens of tips that were verified by detectives. Police initially detained nine individuals for questioning, but released all nine after preliminary reviews established insufficient evidence to file formal charges. On Monday, 24 August 2026, police made the first targeted detention, arresting a 16-year-old suspect who was on vacation leave from a Youth Educational Centre (MOW). A family court initiated proceedings against the minor for a punishable act under juvenile rehabilitation laws, revoked his leave, and ordered his immediate return to the facility.

Raid in Nowa Huta and prosecutor charges

On the evening of Thursday, 27 August 2026, police executed a forced-entry raid on an apartment in Nowa Huta where another suspect was hiding. Officers detained a 19-year-old man who was staying at a property different from his registered home address. Katarzyna Cisło, press officer for the Provincial Police Commander in Kraków, described the operation.

Officers transported the 19-year-old to the Provincial Police Headquarters in Kraków for initial identification procedures. On Friday, 28 August 2026, authorities escorted him to the Kraków-Nowa Huta District Prosecutor's Office, where prosecutors formally issued criminal charges against him for his direct role in the fatal assault.

Cross-border manhunt and Slovak detentions

Police established that the remaining three suspects fled Poland immediately after the attack to seek refuge across the southern border in Slovakia. Małopolska police shared intelligence and location data with Slovak law enforcement, enabling Slovak officers to locate and apprehend the three individuals on Friday, 28 August 2026. The detainees in Slovakia include two adults and one minor. Minister of the Interior and Administration Marcin Kierwiński confirmed the apprehensions on platform X.

The Kraków-Nowa Huta District Prosecutor's Office and the Kraków Regional Court are now coordinating with Slovak authorities to initiate extradition procedures to transfer the three detainees back to Poland. The killing also drew reactions from sports figures, including Wisła Kraków owner Jarosław Królewski, as supporters gathered in Kraków for the funeral of the victim.
