Bavarian fishing chief resigns to avoid removal over autocratic style claims

Internal tensions boil over

The seven Bavarian district fishing associations submitted an application in mid-June for an extraordinary general meeting to remove the president from office. The document accused Axel Bartelt of an "autocratic leadership style" and indecisiveness, stating that constructive cooperation was no longer possible. It described a heavily strained relationship with the vice presidents and a deteriorating working atmosphere.

At the time, the association declined to address the specifics.

The LFV Bavaria fundamentally does not comment on internal procedures and personnel matters of the office, including results of employee surveys.

Timeline of the crisis

Resignation before Saturday's vote

Axel Bartelt resigned with immediate effect on the morning of 25 July 2026, hours before the extraordinary meeting was to open at 10:30 in Munich. The move preempted a scheduled decision on his possible recall, which was item 13 on the agenda. Bartelt told the Münchner Merkur/tz:

That is the last service I can render to the state fishing association.

The resignation was unanimously welcomed by the executive board and the delegates of the district associations, according to a statement from the Landesfischereiverband.

Interim leadership and road to 2027

The two vice presidents, Willi Ruff and Alfred Stier, will lead the association until a new president is elected at the regular general meeting in 2027. They are also tasked with launching a fundamental reorganisation of the association's governing bodies. The extraordinary meeting still needed to decide on a possible interim representation as well as other pending business, since the regular general meeting on 13 June 2026 in Kronach had failed to achieve a quorum.
