A 24-year-old female volunteer firefighter from the Resende Volunteer Firefighters corps died in the early hours of Friday, 25 September 2026, following severe injuries sustained while fighting a rural wildfire in Barrô, located within the Resende municipality of Viseu district. The firefighter was struck by a falling large tree during the overnight combat against the flames on Thursday, 24 September. Medical reporting differed on the exact setting of her death: one civil protection account stated she passed away at Hospital de Lamego, while another reported that she was declared dead inside the ambulance vehicle during emergency transport. Operations officer Paulo Santos from the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) confirmed that the impact of the falling tree caused the fatal injuries. Santos also confirmed to radio broadcaster TSF that other emergency personnel sustained injuries in the incident.

The initial emergency alert for the scrubland blaze in the locality of Barrô was registered at 20:36 on Thursday, with responders encountering burning brushwood across steep terrain. Civil protection authorities steadily expanded resource allocations through the night as conditions developed. By 23:30 on Thursday night, the response force comprised 126 operational personnel supported by 36 emergency vehicles. As the fire remained active at 06:20 on Friday morning, more than 200 operatives were deployed across the fireground. Peak mobilization reached 253 firefighters supported by 74 land vehicles on Friday morning before ground crews managed to stabilize the perimeter. Firefighters faced severe obstacles navigating the terrain, which delayed direct attacks on specific flare-ups across the municipal boundary.

Containment declaration and regional fire operations

Following sustained overnight operations, civil protection authorities officially declared the Resende wildfire brought under control at 07:15 on Friday morning. Operations officer Paulo Santos explained that difficult physical access had constituted the primary operational complication for ground crews working across the sector. Parallel wildfire operations also demanded civil protection resources elsewhere in Portugal, including a rural fire in Odemira. In Odemira, emergency services began controlling the flames and dominated a large portion of the fire perimeter, even as one active front persisted on Friday morning. Operations in Resende transitioned into surveillance and dampening down hot spots to prevent rekindling across the scorched scrubland.

Portuguese President António José Seguro expressed deep consternation over the death of the 24-year-old volunteer firefighter in an official statement published on the presidency website. The head of state addressed condolences directly to the victim's family, personal friends, municipal authorities, and her fellow members of the Resende Volunteer Firefighters.
