Around 70 emergency responders contained an overnight fire at the Bischofalp mountain inn in Elm on 30 September 2026, with no injuries reported from the scene.
Night operation in the Glarus Alps
On the evening of Wednesday, 30 September 2026, a fire broke out at the Bischofalp mountain restaurant in the ski resort area above Elm in the Swiss canton of Glarus. Emergency services were alerted to the incident at 21:45 as flames engulfed the structure, situated at an elevation of approximately 1,650 metres above sea level. The emergency response required the mobilization of around 70 personnel drawn from the municipal fire brigades of Glarus Süd and Glarus, together with civil protection units and the cantonal police. Due to the remote mountain terrain and demanding access conditions, the extinguishing operation proved challenging and continued overnight into the early morning hours of Thursday, 1 October. Fire crews worked to contain the blaze across the complex, and observers reported that visible flames had subsided shortly before midnight.
- Renovation and roof welding work take place at the 1,650-metre-high mountain inn.
- Emergency services receive the alert after fire breaks out in the southern section of the building.
- Firefighters bring the blaze under control and open flames are no longer visible.
- Extinguishing operations by 70 responders officially conclude in the remote mountain area.
Evacuation and containment of the blaze
When the fire began at 21:45, one individual was present inside the mountain guesthouse. That person managed to evacuate the premises independently and reached safety without sustaining any injuries, according to statements released by the Cantonal Police of Glarus on Thursday morning. No other individuals or emergency responders were hurt during the incident. Initial findings indicate that the flames took hold in the southern section of the building before spreading across other parts of the property. Before the emergency services brought the situation under control, the fire had also spread outdoors to ignite a nearby tree stump adjacent to the restaurant. The cantonal police confirmed that the building suffered extensive property damage, though authorities did not disclose a specific financial estimate.
Active renovations and roof work
The mountain inn and hotel was undergoing renovation and structural expansion work at the time the fire took place. Despite the ongoing construction activities, both the restaurant and hotel facilities had remained open for guest operations. Earlier on Wednesday, workers had reportedly conducted welding operations in the roof area of the property. The Cantonal Police of Glarus announced that an official investigation has been initiated to determine the precise cause of the fire. As of Thursday morning, authorities stated that the cause remains unknown, and investigators have not determined whether the daytime welding and construction tasks were connected to the fire that broke out in the southern portion of the premises.
Alpine setting in Elm
The fire was visible from considerable distances across the region, with eyewitnesses noting the bright glare against the mountainside and local webcams capturing a prominent light spot at 1,650 metres altitude. Bischofalp is located directly above Elm, a mountain village situated at the terminus of the Sernftal valley in the Canton of Glarus. The settlement is known for its traditional wooden houses and serves as a popular destination for outdoor recreation, operating as a hiking hub during the summer season and transitioning into a ski and winter sports resort during the winter months. The surrounding Alpine landscape features steep mountain flanks and peaks within the Sardona Tectonic Arena, an area recognized globally as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2008.
