Arthur Fils defeats Luca Van Assche in straight sets at Tokyo ATP 500 after late entry
World No. 9 Arthur Fils defeated compatriot Luca Van Assche 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the ATP 500 in Tokyo, securing his third victory in three days following an administrative error that forced him into qualifiers.
First-round victory in Tokyo
World No. 9 Arthur Fils secured his place in the second round of the ATP 500 tournament in Tokyo on Wednesday, 30 September 2026. The 22-year-old right-hander and French No. 1 eliminated his compatriot Luca Van Assche, ranked 43rd in the world, in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-2 scoreline. The match lasted slightly over an hour and a half on the Japanese hard courts. The contest was a repeat of the 2021 Roland-Garros junior final, with Fils reversing the outcome of that earlier meeting. The result marked his first straight-sets win of the tournament week and his third consecutive match victory in three days.
Administrative deadline delay
Fils was forced to enter the qualifying rounds after missing the formal registration deadline for the event. Following a four-set defeat in the first round of the US Open on 31 August 2026, the Cincinnati Masters 1000 champion and his coaching staff weighed their schedule before choosing to enter Tokyo. By the time the decision was confirmed, the registration window had closed six or seven hours earlier. Tournament organizers did not award a main-draw wildcard invitation to the 2024 Tokyo champion, leaving the qualifying draw as his sole route into the event. Speaking on the ATP website, Fils reflected on the pressure of navigating qualifiers as a newly minted member of the world top 10.
It was one of the biggest challenges of this year. You have just entered the top 10 and you find yourself playing the qualifiers of an ATP 500 that you have already won. So I was very tense, because in a way I could not lose.
Path through qualifiers and Turin chase
The French No. 1 began his tournament on Monday, 28 September 2026, opening with a three-set victory over American player Martin Damm, ranked 103rd in the world. He returned to court the following day to defeat Poland's Kamil Majchrzak, ranked 71st, in another three-set battle to secure a main-draw berth. After the tense qualifying stage, Fils noted that he felt more relaxed during Wednesday's match against Van Assche. The Tokyo campaign is part of Fils' push to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin, which will bring together the world's top eight players in November 2026. In the second round, Fils will face either eighth-ranked Frances Tiafoe of the United States or Japan's Kei Nishikori, a former world No. 4 currently ranked 436th and competing in his final professional tournament.
