Robert Fico accuses Western leaders of seeking direct conflict between NATO and Russia

Accusations of Western escalation

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico published a video message on social media on Saturday, claiming that several Western political leaders are attempting to provoke a direct armed confrontation between NATO and Russia. Fico asserted that Western policies designed to defeat Moscow through the war in Ukraine had failed to yield their intended results. According to the Slovak leader, this strategic failure has prompted hawkish factions within the alliance to pursue direct military escalation instead.

“The failure of the strategy to destroy Russia through the war in Ukraine has led some Western politicians to believe that if the goal cannot be achieved through the Ukrainian army and full support for it, then every effort must be made to trigger a conflict between NATO and Russia.”

Slovak stance on Article 5 and troop deployment

Fico maintained that the conflict in Ukraine is neither Slovakia's war nor NATO's war, arguing that Western military assistance merely adds fuel to the fire. He stated that he takes a sober view of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which governs mutual collective defence in the event of an attack, rather than acting like a hysterical pioneer waving a toy rifle. Earlier in the week, Fico cautioned that an unaddressed drone incursion could lead to the invocation of Article 5. Slovakia joined the alliance on 29 March 2004 alongside Poland during NATO's largest expansion, and Fico reiterated that Bratislava will not deploy soldiers to fight under any fabricated pretext.

European warnings over Russian hybrid threats

Fico's statements contrast directly with assessments released by other European leaders during the same week regarding Russian military activity. French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Friday, following discussions with domestic political party leaders on international security, that Russian hybrid threats against European nations and France have increased in recent weeks. Macron pointed to an attempted drone attack at Leipzig airport in August, which German authorities concluded was organized by Moscow, as proof of shifting Russian aggression. On Thursday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk cited unnamed intelligence services to warn that Russia plans hybrid drone and missile strikes against nations aiding Ukraine, raising concerns over potential accidental impacts on Polish territory.

Diplomatic divergence within the alliance

The remarks reflect persistent disagreements within NATO regarding policy toward the Kremlin and support for Kyiv. While neighbouring countries and Western allies seek tighter collective security measures and increased support for Ukrainian forces, Fico has maintained cordial diplomatic relations with Russia and consistently rejected military aid for Ukraine. Fico stated earlier in the week that Europe stands closer than ever to a broader conflict erupting from the war in Ukraine, claiming that Western backing has failed to weaken Moscow. He stressed that his primary objective remains ensuring that Slovakia, which shares a land border with Ukraine, is not drawn into an armed confrontation.
