Ferry Kissamos grounding off Milos after blackout: 1,246 passengers unharmed, ship refloated
All passengers and crew are safe after a blackout caused the ANEK Lines ferry Kissamos to ground in shallow waters near the port of Milos early Saturday. The ship refloated itself and docked at Adamantas; authorities have opened an investigation.
Incident details
Early Saturday, 27 June 2026, at 03:10, the passenger-vehicle ferry Kissamos, operated by ANEK Lines, lost all electrical power shortly after departing the port of Milos. The vessel was sailing the scheduled route Piraeus – Milos – Souda (Chania). The sudden blackout caused the ship to drift and run aground in shallow waters close to the port.
Response
A Hellenic Coast Guard patrol boat, a fishing vessel and another passenger ferry reached the scene to offer assistance if needed. The engine-room crew managed to restore power autonomously, and the Kissamos refloated without external help. It then proceeded under its own power and docked safely at Adamantas, the main harbour of Milos.
On board
Coast guard sources report 1,246 passengers and 108 crew members were on the ferry. The company’s official statement gave a slightly lower count of 1,184 passengers and 103 crew. All people on board are safe, and no injuries have been reported. The ship remains securely moored at the pier.
Company statement
ANEK Lines added that the technical fault was repaired by the engine-room crew and that the ship returned to Milos unaided. The company is cooperating with the competent Authorities and will provide an update on any further developments.
Investigation
The port authorities are examining the circumstances of the power loss and the subsequent grounding. The Kissamos has been barred from sailing until all prescribed inspections are completed.
