Passenger ferry with 270 people capsizes off Northern Cyprus en route to Turkey

Ferry overturns shortly after departure

A passenger catamaran ferry carrying 270 people overturned in the Mediterranean Sea on Sunday, 30 August 2026, minutes after departing from the port of Kyrenia, also known locally as Girne, in Northern Cyprus. The vessel was conducting a scheduled crossing toward the Turkish port of Tasucu, situated in the southern province of Mersin. Shortly after leaving the harbour in the early afternoon, the catamaran began taking on water several kilometres out from the coastline. Accounts from maritime agencies and regional authorities placed the site of the capsizing between two and six kilometres off the northern Cypriot shore. The ship subsequently overturned, prompting emergency search and rescue teams across northern Cyprus and Turkey to mobilize.

Multi-vessel rescue operation deployed

Emergency services initiated an immediate joint response using maritime and aerial assets to reach the overturned catamaran. The Turkish Cypriot Coast Guard dispatched patrol boats to the site, supported by an emergency rescue helicopter and personnel from the Civil Defence service. In addition, private boats and other vessels stationed in Kyrenia harbour sailed out into open water to assist in pulling survivors from the sea. Rescuers transferred evacuees directly onto surrounding boats that had gathered around the capsized vessel. Minister of Public Works and Transport Erhan Arikli stated that medical personnel stood ready on the mainland and confirmed that passengers found in critical condition would receive immediate transfer to hospitals.

Authorities confirm passenger status

Regional officials delivered running updates throughout Sunday afternoon across Turkish television channels as the evacuation progressed. The mayor of Kyrenia, Murat Senkul, confirmed in an interview with CNN Turk that 270 people were aboard the ferry, comprising 258 passengers alongside crew members. Senkul described the maritime situation as serious while announcing that rescue personnel had successfully reached 159 of the 258 passengers. Transport Minister Erhan Arikli spoke to Turkish state broadcaster TRT to confirm the immediate deployment of state resources and ongoing evacuation efforts.

The Coast Guard and Civil Defence intervened immediately. Unfortunately, the ship is currently capsized. Work is underway to evacuate about 260 passengers.

Weather conditions and ongoing inquiry

Speaking to broadcaster NTV, Minister Arikli stated that difficult weather and sea conditions prevailed in the northern Mediterranean waters at the time the ferry overturned. Authorities noted that a comprehensive investigation will determine the precise mechanical or structural cause behind the catamaran taking on water. Midday reports from international news agencies indicated that no fatalities had been confirmed among the passengers and crew. Northern Cyprus, officially designated as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, is recognized internationally solely by Ankara, while the southern Republic of Cyprus holds membership in the European Union. Search and rescue operations continue off the coast of Girne to account for everyone on board.
