Raúl Fernández dominates Silverstone as Aprilia sweeps podium with Martín second

Fernández takes control from the start

Raúl Fernández (Aprilia Trackhouse) seized the lead into the first corner after pole-sitter Jorge Martín bogged down off the line, dropping from first to fourth. The Madrid native, who had crashed out of Saturday's Sprint race, converted that frustration into an immediate escape. By lap four he had opened a gap of 2.8 seconds to Marco Bezzecchi and 3.8 seconds to Martín, gaining roughly a second per lap in the early stages. From there, Fernández managed his advantage to the flag, claiming his first Sunday victory of the season and the second of his MotoGP career. Only on the final lap did he acknowledge the rear tyre beginning to protest, by which point the win was already secure.

The victory came after Fernández renewed with Trackhouse Aprilia for two more seasons, ending months of uncertainty about his place on the 2027 grid. He had expressed frustration at the delay in closing the negotiation. He celebrated the win wearing a special helmet commemorating Spain's football World Cup triumph in the United States, featuring the names of all 26 squad members, his own number 25, and a caricature of the players lifting the trophy.

Aprilia lock out the podium

Three Aprilia riders filled the podium for the second consecutive day, mirroring Saturday's Sprint result. Martín, who won the Sprint on Saturday, admitted he had feared the worst during that shorter race.

“I thought they were all going to catch me because I had all the alarms set about the tyre.”

On Sunday, Martín recovered from his poor start, reclaiming third from Marc Márquez before passing Bezzecchi for second around lap eight or nine (El Confidencial cites lap nine, La Vanguardia lap eight). He could never close to within three and a half seconds of Fernández. Bezzecchi held third despite intense late pressure from Álex Márquez, who finished fourth.

After the race, Fernández congratulated Martín on his championship position.

“Look how the championship has shaped up for you.”

“Well, we're all very evenly matched.”

Championship standings shift

Martín's second place, combined with Ai Ogura's crash on lap ten of twenty, extended his lead at the top of the standings. Martín now sits on 240 points, 31 ahead of Bezzecchi (209), who overtook Ogura (203) in the classification. Marc Márquez dropped to fourth on 200 points after his seventh-place finish. La Vanguardia reported the lead as 29 points. The result capped a weekend in which Martín took pole position, won the Sprint on Saturday, and secured second on Sunday for his third consecutive podium.

Ducati struggles at Silverstone

Marc Márquez arrived at the British Grand Prix cautious after severe rear-tyre degradation in Saturday's Sprint, where he finished ninth. Before the race he set modest expectations from sixth on the grid.

“I'll try to be in the top 5, that's an optimistic result.”

He ran as high as third early in the race but gradually dropped back as Álex Márquez passed him on lap six, followed by Pedro Acosta on lap seven. Others continued to overtake the Spaniard, who eventually finished seventh. His factory Ducati teammate Francesco Bagnaia crashed out at turn seven on lap eight, his ninth crash of the season. Joan Mir (Honda) and Álex Rins (Yamaha) both retired after an incident together, and Iker Lecuona also abandoned before the midpoint. The race covered 20 laps of the five-kilometre Silverstone circuit, the longest layout on the MotoGP calendar, which has produced 12 different winners in the last 12 seasons.
