He stated that the hostility started well before kickoff during pre-match warm-up routines, with 60,000 spectators targeting his relatives while match officials took no action to halt the abuse.

Guendouzi previously spent three seasons with Lyon's traditional rival Olympique de Marseille between 2021 and 2024 before moving to Lazio and Fenerbahce. The midfielder stated that his affiliation with Marseille was well known, arguing that past fixtures at the Stade Velodrome featured Lyon players celebrating in front of rival supporters under similar conditions.
