Tournament qualification and financial impact
The 2-1 defeat on the night sealed a 3-2 aggregate victory for Fenerbahçe and confirmed Lyon's elimination from the tournament. The result marked the fifth consecutive season in which a Ligue 1 club failed to advance through the Champions League qualifying rounds, following eliminations for Monaco in 2021 and 2022, Marseille in 2023, and Nice in 2025. Lyon will enter the Europa League for the third consecutive season, awaiting Friday's draw after missing out on the 18.62 million euro participation bonus awarded to Champions League league phase participants. Fenerbahçe, whose squad includes N'Golo Kanté, Mattéo Guendouzi, and Lukaku, secured a place in Thursday's 18:00 draw.
