Federal agents shoot man in Marble Hill, Mamdani demands Trump end ICE actions
A man was wounded in an encounter with federal agents in Marble Hill on Thursday afternoon. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he would demand that Donald Trump end ICE enforcement in New York City, and Governor Kathy Hochul demanded a full accounting from federal authorities.
What happened
A man was shot and wounded on Thursday in an encounter with federal agents in Marble Hill, a residential neighborhood that Reuters and Deutsche Welle place in the Bronx and POLITICO describes as northern Manhattan. The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. ET, and the man was taken to a nearby hospital, where the New York Police Department said he was conscious and receiving medical attention. The NYPD said its officers were not involved and were not on the scene at the time of the shooting. The department described only a shooting involving federal law enforcement agents, and a spokesperson said the agents belonged to the Department of Homeland Security, the parent agency of ICE, Customs and Border Protection and Border Patrol. Federal authorities are investigating.
Which agency fired is still contested in the coverage. The New York Times, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that ICE agents carried out the shooting. Mayor Zohran Mamdani also said an ICE agent fired, and local media said ICE was involved. The Department of Homeland Security had not publicly commented, and the White House did not immediately return requests for comment.

Mayor and governor respond
Mamdani wrote on X that agents surrounded the man and a 5-year-old child who was in the car before firing multiple rounds. The child is believed to be physically unharmed. The mayor said he had called the president and would demand that Trump end all ICE enforcement actions in the city. His spokesperson, Dora Pekec, said the mayor had not been able to reach the president as of 8 p.m. Thursday.
This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation.
Hochul said she had been briefed on the incident and called on federal authorities to explain what happened and why.
We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident.
A witness told WABC she first thought the four shots she heard were a car backfiring. She then saw police and ICE agents running down the street, many of them masked.
Wider pattern of shootings
Shootings by immigration agents have drawn sharp criticism during Trump's second term. In January, an ICE agent killed Renee Good, a 37-year-old US citizen, during operations in Minneapolis. Later that month, two US Customs and Border Protection officers killed Alex Pretti, another US citizen, after an altercation in the city. In July, ICE agents fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, in Houston and Joan Sebastian Guerrero, 25, in Maine at traffic stops less than a week apart. Federal immigration agents have been involved in at least two dozen shootings since Trump returned to power in January 2025.
ICE detentions in New York state rose from 865 in April to 1,552 in July, which places the Marble Hill shooting within a sharp increase in enforcement activity.

What comes next
Federal authorities are investigating the shooting, and Hochul has demanded a full and transparent accounting. Mamdani said he intends to press Trump directly on ICE enforcement once they speak, and his office said that call had not yet taken place. The Department of Homeland Security had not publicly commented on the incident as of the latest reports.
