Severe storms hit Mallorca, leaving one dead in Felanitx and causing 173 emergency incidents

Fatal incident in Felanitx

A sudden severe storm on Wednesday caused the death of a resident in the eastern Mallorca town of Felanitx. Emergency services and local officials reported that the woman, whose age was given between 63 and 67 depending on the source, was walking along Calle Bellpuig around 15:00 on her way to work. She slipped on the flooded street and was swept by the runoff into the undercarriage of a parked vehicle. Trapped under the car in water reaching knee height, she drowned before bystanders could pull her free. Neighbors performed initial cardiopulmonary resuscitation before SAMU 061 medical personnel arrived, but doctors confirmed her death at the scene. The Judicial Police unit of the Guardia Civil from Manacor has opened an investigation into the precise sequence of events.

Widespread emergency operations across Mallorca

The storm system triggered an orange weather alert across the Balearic Islands, bringing wind gusts of up to 109 km/h and rainfall reaching 47 liters per square meter. The 112 emergency coordination center logged a rapid increase in incidents, rising from 119 cases at 16:00 to 173 calls by 20:00. The overwhelming majority of emergency responses occurred on Mallorca, which accounted for 149 incidents, compared to seven on Menorca and two on Ibiza. Municipalities across the island faced severe localized problems, led by Palma with 59 separate incidents.

Emergency teams responded to 48 fallen trees blocking roadways across the archipelago, along with 29 flooded buildings and private premises. In addition, the Torrent de sa Cabana overflowed its banks, which forced authorities to close a section of the Ma-4015 road connecting Manacor to Cales de Mallorca.

Power failures and transport disruption

Electrical infrastructure suffered heavy damage during the afternoon storm. Utility operator Endesa reported that up to 17,000 customers temporarily lost electricity across Mallorca because of faults on medium-voltage lines. Emergency services registered disruptions across 14 power lines, with the most severe impact felt on the Palmanyola circuit supplying the municipalities of Esporles and Banyalbufar. Air travel was also disrupted at Palma Airport, where Spanish airport operator Aena confirmed that 44 flights were cancelled over the course of Wednesday.

Beyond power cuts and fallen trees, emergency dispatches included 14 detached urban structures, 11 instances of roadway obstacles, ten flooded streets, and seven high-risk structural detachment alerts.

Institutional responses and local cancellations

Following the tragedy in Felanitx, the municipality canceled all scheduled festivities for the local Cas Concos celebrations as both a security precaution and a sign of mourning. Felanitx Mayor Catalina Soler cut short travel to Madrid to return to the town to oversee local recovery efforts. Regional and national officials offered condolences to the victim's family, including Congress of Deputies President Francina Armengol and Balearic President Marga Prohens.
