A violent knife assault occurred on Thursday morning, 24 September 2026, on the premises of the Benedictine Sisters Abbey located at 5 Benedyktyńska Street in Jarosław, in Poland's south-eastern Podkarpackie Voivodeship. Emergency dispatchers received an urgent notification at approximately 9:30 regarding an ongoing knife attack within the monastic complex. According to initial findings established by responding officers, the assailant had begun stabbing individuals across the property roughly fifteen minutes prior to the alert. The incident developed across the abbey grounds, where multiple individuals were targeted in quick succession before law enforcement personnel arrived on the scene.

Police response and detention of the suspect

Patrol officers dispatched to the scene in Jarosław located and overpowered the attacker directly on the monastery grounds within minutes of the notification. Law enforcement identified the suspect as a 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen and placed him in custody on site without further reported resistance. Responding units immediately cordoned off the entire abbey perimeter to prevent access by unauthorized persons and to secure physical evidence. Emergency medical rescue teams arrived alongside police, establishing staging areas across the property to provide immediate triage and trauma treatment to the victims.

Casualties and hospitalizations

The knife attack affected a total of six individuals, resulting in one fatality and leaving five other victims hospitalized with stab wounds. Initial police accounts documented that four men and one woman suffered injuries, with investigators confirming that three of the injured men were Catholic priests. Emergency crews transferred all surviving victims to the nearest regional hospitals for specialized trauma treatment. Medical staff evaluated the physical condition of three wounded men as critical and directly life-threatening.

Anna Długosz, a senior staff aspirant and press officer for the District Police Headquarters in Jarosław, explained that officers were originally dispatched after receiving word that a man had been attacked with a knife on abbey property. Długosz subsequently confirmed that one male victim died as a result of the wounds sustained during the assault.

Ongoing investigation into the motive

Following the suspect's arrest, extensive investigative procedures began across the Benedictine complex under the supervision of local prosecutors. Forensic technicians conducted detailed crime scene examinations, catalogued physical evidence, and conducted interviews with witnesses who were present during the sequence of stabbings. Law enforcement authorities stated that the motives behind the 31-year-old Ukrainian national's actions remain completely unknown at this preliminary stage of the investigation.

Authorities also noted that the identity and formal status of the injured woman have not yet been clarified. When asked whether the wounded woman belongs to the Benedictine sisterhood, Długosz explained that the police do not possess that information at present. Police officials stressed that the case remains active and evolving, with further official announcements dependent on the completion of initial forensic activities and formal interrogations.
