Three arrested after fatal daylight shooting of 20-year-old man in Málaga

Daylight ambush in Pinosol

Emergency dispatchers at 112 Andalucía received multiple phone calls at 11:40 on Friday reporting gunfire along Calle Barcenillas in the Pinosol area of Málaga. A 20-year-old Spanish national was sitting on a public bench near his residence when three assailants approached on foot and fired several rounds at him. The injured victim fled along the street toward Plaza Virgen del Rocío while shouting for help, telling passersby that attackers had shot him and were trying to kill him. He eventually sought refuge inside a nearby supermarket.

Emergency medical technicians, Local Police, and National Police units deployed immediately to the supermarket. Paramedics stabilized the man on site before rushing him to Hospital Carlos Haya in Málaga capital. Medical staff performed emergency surgery to treat at least two gunshot wounds, located in his back and leg, but the victim died from his injuries several hours later.

The victim was sitting on a bench near his home. Three men approached, unexpectedly firing several times at this person, who was transferred to a hospital, where he later died.

Manhunt under Operación Brown

The National Police mobilized specialized units under the case name Operación Brown, assigning the investigation to the Drug and Organized Crime Unit (UDYCO) and the Special Response Group Against Organized Crime (GRECO) Costa del Sol. Initial findings pointed toward a targeted settling of accounts. Uniformed citizen security patrols intercepted the first suspect on the street within minutes of the shooting, while the two other attackers fled the neighbourhood.

Detectives from UDYCO and GRECO subsequently identified an apartment in Málaga capital utilized by the first detainee. Officers conducted an entry and search of the property, taking the second suspect into custody.

Arrest in Fuengirola and organized crime links

The third suspect altered his clothing and physical appearance to evade police cordons across the metropolitan area. Following investigative tracking, officers located and arrested him around 23:00 on a street in Fuengirola. One of the three detained suspects is a Swedish national of Somali origin. Discussing the incident on the television program Más Vale Tarde on LaSexta, journalist Leo Álvarez reported that investigators viewed the ambush as a contract killing, while commentator Bea de Vicente noted that organized syndicates recruit young hitmen from northern European countries such as Sweden, Norway, and the Netherlands.

Political debate over provincial security

The killing in Pinosol prompted regional political scrutiny over public safety across Málaga province. Antonio Sevilla, the president of Vox Málaga and a deputy in the Parliament of Andalusia, stated that the province had recorded three fatal firearm attacks within a single month, pointing to recent homicides in Marbella, Pizarra, and Málaga capital.

The notable increase in shootings in Málaga has caused the image of the province to be seriously damaged.

Sevilla called on regional and national administrations to enforce measures against illegal firearm trafficking and organized drug gangs operating on the Costa del Sol. He confirmed scheduled discussions with police trade unions to review their operational resources, while UDYCO and GRECO continue active inquiries to establish the command chain behind the shooting.
