Scooter flees Carabinieri checkpoint, crashes in Abruzzo: one dead
A scooter carrying two people refused to stop at a Carabinieri checkpoint on Wednesday evening, sparking a pursuit along the SS16 that ended in a crash at the border of Città Sant'Angelo and Silvi. One man died despite emergency efforts; the second person was detained.
The checkpoint and chase
Around 20:00 on Wednesday, 1 July, a scooter with two people on board failed to stop when flagged by Carabinieri on the Strada Statale 16 in the province of Pescara. The military police immediately began a pursuit that continued along the SS16 toward the border with the province of Teramo.
The crash
At the boundary between Città Sant'Angelo and Silvi, the scooter left the road. Initial reports from ANSA and local media suggest that a collision with the Carabinieri vehicle may have occurred just before the crash, causing the scooter to veer off the carriageway.
Rescue and fatality
Emergency medical services (118) arrived promptly with a fully-equipped ambulance. Paramedics carried out prolonged resuscitation attempts, but the man died at the scene. The second person on the scooter was taken into custody by the Carabinieri.
Investigation and disruption
Carabinieri, the Polizia Stradale, and the local police of Silvi are conducting on-site surveys and all necessary examinations to reconstruct the sequence of events. The crash caused heavy traffic congestion and chaos throughout the area.

A comparable episode occurred late yesterday morning, 30 June, on the Via Casilina between Valmontone and Labico in the province of Rome. A car carrying three men tried to evade a Carabinieri checkpoint, leading to a pursuit of several kilometres. One occupant was arrested, while the other two fled on foot and remain at large. Investigations are ongoing.
