A head-on collision between two passenger cars on the EN246 in Portalegre on 5 October 2026 killed a 50-year-old man and injured three others.
Head-on collision on the EN246
A fatal head-on collision between two passenger vehicles occurred on the afternoon of Monday, 5 October 2026, in the municipality of Portalegre in east-central Portugal. The crash took place along the Estrada Nacional 246 (EN246) within the parish of Urra, approximately two kilometres past the locality of Santiago on the road heading toward Arronches. Emergency responders received the formal alert at 17:59, prompting an immediate mobilization overseen by the Alto Alentejo Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command. Both light passenger cars sustained extensive damage in the direct impact, which trapped occupants and caused an immediate disruption to regional road transit. The collision resulted in one confirmed death at the site and left three additional individuals with injuries ranging from minor to critical.
Emergency response and victim transport
A total of 21 emergency responders deployed to the scene, operating with seven emergency vehicles and a dedicated medical evacuation helicopter. The multi-agency response brought together personnel from local volunteer fire departments, the National Republican Guard (GNR), and the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM). First responders triaged the casualties immediately upon arrival at the crash site. A 45-year-old man suffered severe injuries and required stabilization before being airlifted by an INEM medical helicopter to the Hospital do Espírito Santo in Évora. Meanwhile, two other injured occupants, aged 20 and 23, were treated for lighter injuries before being transported by ground ambulances to the Hospital of Portalegre.

Casualty assessments and record revisions
The fatal casualty was declared dead at the scene of the crash by attending medical personnel prior to any hospital evacuation. Arrangements were subsequently made to transport the deceased to the legal medicine department located at the Hospital of Portalegre for formal forensic examination. Early situational reports released around 19:10 indicated that a 56-year-old woman was being evaluated on site by INEM medical teams. However, Civil Protection authorities later updated the official casualty records for the incident. The revised notification clarified that the deceased person was a 50-year-old man and confirmed that all four individuals involved in the collision were male.
Traffic disruption and technical inquiry
The severity of the impact and the emergency response required the complete closure of the EN246 in both directions along the affected corridor. Traffic remained entirely blocked through 20:00 as specialized law enforcement units commenced an on-site inquiry. The GNR Road Accident Crime Investigation Unit, known as NICAAV, carried out technical surveys and gathered physical evidence to reconstruct the sequence of the crash. Civil Protection authorities noted that the road would not reopen until investigators concluded their on-site duties, the two wrecked vehicles were cleared, and road crews completed thorough cleaning of debris and fluids from the asphalt.
