Man dies attempting to rescue dog in Săcălaz social housing fire in Timiș County
A man died after re-entering a burning social housing complex in Săcălaz to rescue his dog, while another resident was hospitalized with burns.
Midnight fire in Săcălaz
A fire broke out shortly after midnight in the night between 21 and 22 August 2026 at a social housing complex in the commune of Săcălaz, located in Timiș County. The single-story building housed eight separate apartments under a shared roof structure. Flames rapidly spread across the upper section of the complex, eventually encompassing an area of approximately 400 square meters. A total of 17 residents managed to evacuate the building on their own before the full deployment of emergency crews reached the scene. Witnesses reported that the pavilion caught fire across its entire span in approximately ten minutes, creating immediate panic among the families living in the units.
A person caught in the fire was taken over by a medical team and transported to the hospital. The male victim presented burns to his upper and lower limbs. From information received from witnesses, a second person entered the interior of an apartment and was caught by a collapsed ceiling. Following investigations, the victim was identified; unfortunately, they have injuries incompatible with life. Work is underway to extract the victim.
Fatal rescue attempt and casualties
While occupants assembled outdoors, one man re-entered the burning structure in an attempt to retrieve his dog, which had remained trapped inside one of the apartments. After he entered the room, the compromised ceiling collapsed under the heat, trapping him beneath the falling rubble. Firefighters subsequently located his body during search operations and confirmed that he had sustained fatal injuries. Another male resident suffered burns to both his arms and legs after failing to leave his apartment in time. Emergency medical crews provided on-site care before transporting him to the hospital, while the remaining 17 occupants avoided physical harm.
