Two fatal collisions block traffic on national road 11 and the S12 expressway in Poland
Two separate morning collisions on 3 October 2026 left two people dead and two injured on Polish highways, halting traffic on national road 11 in Opole and the S12 near Lublin.
Fatal collision on national road 11
In the morning hours of 3 October 2026, a fatal traffic collision occurred on national road 11 (DK11) in the Opole Voivodeship. The crash took place in the village of Biskupice, situated near Byczyna on the route between Kluczbork and Kępno that connects the Opole and Greater Poland regions. A passenger car collided with a heavy truck with such force that the front end of the passenger vehicle was almost completely crushed. Emergency services, including fire brigade units, emergency medical teams, and police patrols, were immediately dispatched to the location. Resuscitation efforts could not save the driver of the car, and an attending physician at the scene formally confirmed the driver's death.
Emergency response and traffic diversions
Following the collision, authorities closed national road 11 entirely in both directions between Biskupice and Byczyna to facilitate recovery work. Police officers began conducting an on-site investigation under the direct supervision of a prosecutor to reconstruct the precise sequence of events and secure physical evidence. Officials from road management agencies indicated that clearance operations would take several hours, warning motorists in the area to anticipate significant travel delays.
The duty officer from the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways in Opole released an official statement regarding the closure.
At the scene of the accident, the road is completely blocked.
To maintain vehicle flow, police established a mandatory detour directing traffic through Paruszowice, Gosław, and Wojsławice toward regional road 487 (DW487). Emergency response and travel conditions were further hindered by heavy morning fog that severely limited driver visibility along the corridor. Police issued appeals instructing drivers to exercise heightened caution, reduce their speeds to match road conditions, turn on their fog lights, and comply with instructions from officers stationed along the detour.

Early morning truck fire on the S12
The crash in Biskupice followed a separate fatal collision that occurred earlier on 3 October 2026 on the S12 expressway in Lublin Voivodeship. The incident happened near the locality of Jakubowice Konińskie along the expressway section connecting the Lublin Czechów and Lublin Rudnik junctions. Two freight trucks collided on the highway, which triggered a fire in one of the involved vehicles. The driver of one truck died immediately at the scene, while two other individuals suffered injuries and were transported to regional hospitals for medical treatment.
The impact and subsequent vehicle blaze led to an immediate closure of the S12 carriageway heading in the direction of Warsaw. Traffic officials established a diversion at the Lublin Rudnik interchange to route approaching vehicles away from the crash site. Emergency personnel completed firefighting, vehicle removal, and roadway cleanup tasks at around 4:00 AM, allowing authorities to restore passage through the expressway segment. Traffic authorities noted that secondary disruptions could continue in the area and reminded drivers to adjust their speeds.
