Trench collapse on Ballygowan Road
Two workers died on Friday, 2 October 2026, following a trench collapse during earthworks on the Ballygowan Road in Crossnacreevy, County Down. The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received an emergency 999 call reporting the workplace incident at 10:45 BST. Emergency responders arriving at the scene discovered that multiple people were trapped beneath earth and debris after the trench gave way. Paramedics and rescue personnel assessed the trapped workers at the site, but both individuals succumbed to their injuries before any medical transfer could take place. Ambulance service officials subsequently confirmed that no individuals were transported from the location to hospital facilities.
Multi-agency response and road closures
The scale of the collapse required a coordinated deployment involving several specialized emergency divisions from across County Down and greater Belfast. The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service sent two dedicated specialist rescue teams along with four operational fire appliances, including two engines from Knock Fire Station, one from Carryduff, and one from Cadogan Fire Station. The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service assigned three emergency ambulances and two Hazardous Area Response Teams (HART) trained in complex extrications. To facilitate access for rescue vehicles, the Police Service of Northern Ireland instituted an immediate total closure of the Ballygowan Road in both directions. Public transport operator Ulsterbus diverted routes 512 and 12 around the area, suspending services to scheduled stops at Crossnacreevy School, Roselawn, and Ryan Park.

Inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland (HSENI) deployed directly to the site to conduct inquiries into excavation safety protocols and workplace compliance. HSENI confirmed that its personnel are liaising closely with the Police Service of Northern Ireland and other relevant agencies to determine the cause of the collapse. The incident took place on a rural road in Crossnacreevy, located in the South Belfast and Mid Down constituency adjacent to the East Belfast boundary near Ryan Park.
Community and political reactions
Elected representatives from across Northern Ireland expressed condolences to the families of the victims while urging the public to avoid speculation during the active investigation. Alliance MP for South Belfast and Mid Down Sorcha Eastwood addressed the loss of life among workers engaged in construction duties.
It is really tragic news that two workers have been killed in a trench collapse at Crossnacreevy. These are workers out doing an honest day's graft who won't be coming home.
Democratic Unionist Party leader and East Belfast MP Gavin Robinson asked motorists to avoid the Ballygowan Road corridor, acknowledging the severe toll on the families and thanking first responders. Ulster Unionist Party representative Dr Kathryn Owen emphasized the close-knit character of the local rural community and called on the public to allow authorities to establish the facts. Alliance MLA for East Belfast Peter McReynolds also extended sympathies as police and safety inspectors maintained an active presence at the scene into Friday evening.
Crossnacreevy is a close knit community, and I know this will have caused enormous shock and sadness, both locally and across the wider area.
