Collapse during demolition work

A three-storey private residential building on Calle Fatás in the northeastern Spanish municipality of Sariñena collapsed on Thursday, 27 August 2026. The incident occurred around 12:00 while three construction workers were carrying out structural demolition and rubble clearance operations. The property, located at Calle de José Fatás 21, had remained uninhabited for a long period before the work began. The sudden structural failure caused the building to cave in completely, impacting an adjacent structure that was also vacant. Sariñena Mayor Francisco Villellas confirmed that no surrounding residential streets required evacuation following the collapse. The demolition project involved a primary contracting firm and a subcontractor, according to regional trade union representatives.

Emergency deployment and technical rescue

Emergency coordination services received the initial distress alert at approximately 12:30 through the 112 network, prompting the deployment of emergency personnel across the Aragon region. One worker managed to escape the falling debris on his own and was transferred to a medical facility for examination. The other two workers were buried beneath tonnes of masonry and compromised timber. The Provincial Council of Huesca mobilised firefighting crews from stations in Sariñena, Barbastro, and Benabarre, the latter supplying a specialist canine search unit, while crews from Sabiñánigo established an Advanced Command Post with drone surveillance support.

Additional rescue teams from the Huesca and Zaragoza municipal fire services joined the site alongside the Guardia Civil, Labour Inspection officials, Civil Protection, the Red Cross, and 061 emergency medical teams supported by a 112 helicopter. Zaragoza deployed seven specialist personnel with command and rescue vehicles to extract a worker trapped by the foot. Rescuers placed electronic telemeters across the unstable facade to detect fractional structural movements. Rescuers had to halt operations multiple times when audible alarms signaled shifting debris. Teams eventually freed the trapped worker alive with reserved medical prognosis, while the third worker was recovered deceased.

UGT Aragon occupational health secretary José de las Morenas described the initial rescue attempts as teams searched the ruins.

Official mourning and community response

Provincial Council President Isaac Claver visited the Advanced Command Post to monitor operations alongside local authorities. Following the conclusion of rescue efforts, the Sariñena Town Council declared an official day of mourning for Friday, 28 August 2026, ordering municipal flags to fly at half-mast across all public buildings.

The local government released a statement expressing condolences to the victims and their families.

Today is a very sad day for the municipality. Our thought is, above all, with the family of the deceased person and with the injured workers and their relatives. We want to convey all the affection and support of Sariñena in such painful moments.

The municipal administration suspended multiple public gatherings scheduled under the Agosto Cultural programme and the lead-up to the San Antolín patron saint festivities. The cancellations affected the screening of award-winning films from the Huesca Film Festival, the general rehearsal of the traditional local dance, and the inauguration of the Casa del Gasto. Emergency teams remained at the Calle Fatás site into the evening to stabilize the remaining structure and secure perimeter safety.
