A brawl among about ten people near the train station in Clermont-Ferrand turned deadly late Saturday when a 23-year-old man was stabbed in the heart. A second victim, 19, is in serious condition with an abdominal wound.
The incident
Shortly after 22:30 local time on Saturday, 13 June, a brawl erupted among a group of about ten people on Place des Carmes Dechaux in Clermont-Ferrand, a square close to the city's main railway station and the historic headquarters of the Michelin tyre company. The confrontation, for which police have not yet established a motive, escalated rapidly, and at least two of those involved were attacked with a bladed weapon that sources described as likely a knife.
The victims
The most seriously hurt, a 23-year-old man, suffered a stab wound to the heart. Bystanders on the square administered first aid until officers from the BAC anti-crime unit arrived to take over, according to local daily La Montagne. He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition but died of his injuries a short time later. The second victim, aged 19, received a knife wound to the abdomen. He was also hospitalised in a serious condition, though as of Sunday morning it was unclear whether his injuries were life-threatening.

The Clermont-Ferrand public prosecutor's office has taken charge of the investigation and is expected to issue a statement by the end of Sunday. No information has been released about any potential link between the detainees and the victims, and the search for other participants in the brawl appears to be ongoing.
Context and community reaction
Place des Carmes Dechaux, a well-trafficked spot in the station district, has longstanding ties to Michelin, which still maintains offices there. A fatal stabbing in such a central location is uncommon in Clermont-Ferrand and has prompted a significant police response. Officers remained in the area on Sunday, and additional patrols are expected in the days ahead as the investigation proceeds and residents seek reassurance.
