Laurent Nuñez denounces far-right 'exploitation' of Louis's ambush killing in Narbonne
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has dismissed claims of a racist motive in the ambush killing of 17-year-old Louis in Narbonne, accusing the far right of 'exploitation' and warning of a youth violence crisis.
Ambush killing of 17-year-old Louis
Louis, a 17-year-old boy, was beaten to death in an ambush in Narbonne during the night of 19 to 20 June 2026. The teenager had been living in a child welfare structure run by the Aide Sociale à l'Enfance (ASE). Five young men, aged between 16 and 20 according to Minister Nuñez, have been charged with assassination in connection with the attack.
Minister decries far-right 'exploitation'
In an interview with Le Parisien published on Saturday 27 June, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez rejected assertions by far-right figures that the crime carried a racist character. He accused those figures of cynically exploiting the tragedy.
There is an exploitation by the far right in this case. Despite what some claim, there is no proven racist character to this crime, according to the public prosecutor.
Nuñez went on to express deepening concern about youth violence, describing it as "totally unbridled" among a segment of young people. He said the case must force a national reflection on how children are cared for in structures like the ASE.
Weekend gatherings show tensions
Two memorial gatherings were planned in Narbonne over the weekend of 27-28 June. The first, held on Saturday evening after social media calls, drew only a handful of attendees despite a heavy police presence. An AFP journalist observed that tracts were being distributed by young people claiming to belong to an identitarian group called "Furie", urging participation in Sunday's rally.
The Sunday demonstration was billed as "Justice pour tous" (Justice for all) in honour of Louis, and the tracts described him as "beaten to death by a gang of scum".
Family rejects political recovery
The victim's aunt, speaking on behalf of the family, told AFP that relatives would not take part in either gathering. She refused what she called any political recovery of Louis's death.
We refuse any political recovery, even if we thank the French people for mobilising.
Five suspects charged
According to Laurent Nuñez, five young men have been placed under formal investigation for assassination. Aged 16 to 20, they are the sole suspects identified so far in the ambush that killed Louis.
