Three family members die after cliff standoff over iPhone debt in Maharashtra
Three family members died at Khavda hill in Maharashtra after an 18-year-old climbed a 120-meter cliff following an argument over iPhone installment payments, leading to a failed rescue attempt.
Dispute and arrival at Khavda hill
On Friday, 21 August 2026, an eighteen-year-old youth named Kunal traveled to Khavda hill in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district of Maharashtra, India. The journey occurred directly after a family dispute at home regarding the financing of a mobile handset. Kunal had purchased an Apple iPhone 15 on monthly installment credit but was unable to keep up with the required payments, leading to an argument with his father. According to police officials, disagreements between the two also involved messages exchanged regarding the device. Police records indicated that the inability to cover the monthly installments had created mounting tension within the household before the final argument took place. Following the confrontation, the teenager left the family residence and arrived at the elevated terrain of Khavda hill at approximately 10:00.
Standoff and failed negotiations
At the summit of Khavda hill, Kunal took up a position on the narrow edge of a rock face that drops between 120 and 150 meters into a ravine. For nearly three hours, the teenager remained near the precipice while family members, local residents, tourists, and responding police officers attempted to convince him to step away from danger. Witnesses noted that Kunal refused to listen to advice and continually shifted his posture while speaking with his mother. His mother, Sangeeta, repeatedly begged him to return to safety while bystanders tried to intervene. Several people in the gathered crowd offered to contribute funds to help him obtain an iPhone 15 Pro model if he agreed to move back. Video recordings captured by onlookers at the scene documented the teenager standing on the rocky outcrop while negotiators made persistent appeals.
Attempted rescue and three fatalities
The confrontation reached a fatal conclusion at approximately 13:00 following three hours of continuous talks. Kunal's father, Murlidhar Chandgude, moved forward and seized his son's arm in an effort to pull him back from the cliff edge. During the physical rescue attempt, both father and son lost their balance and fell down the 120 to 150-meter gorge. Sangeeta witnessed the fall of her husband and son and subsequently jumped from the same cliff edge. Spectators who had gathered along the perimeter watched the entire sequence of events as emergency personnel moved to secure the area below the cliff. Police officers and emergency responders at the site confirmed that all three family members died on impact.

Earlier smartphone incident in New Delhi
The incident in Maharashtra follows a similar tragedy that took place in India at the start of 2026. In that case, three sisters aged 12, 14, and 16 died after jumping from an upper level of a residential building in a suburb of New Delhi. Their father had barred them from using mobile phones after the three girls developed dependencies on online video games and refused to attend school. The deaths prompted extensive discussions across Indian media and community forums concerning youth device addiction and domestic disputes involving mobile hardware.
