Deutsche Bahn security employee critically injured after falling from moving train during ticket check scuffle

A 26-year-old Deutsche Bahn security employee is fighting for his life after falling from a moving train during a scuffle with a passenger on Friday evening. The incident occurred near Ettlingen-Bruchhausen on the Offenburg-Karlsruhe line; the suspect, a 36-year-old German man, was arrested on board.

The incident

The events unfolded on Friday evening on a regional train travelling from Offenburg to Karlsruhe. During a routine ticket inspection, a dispute broke out with a 36-year-old German passenger. The situation escalated when the passenger, who is believed to have been under the influence of alcohol, began insulting the ticket inspector. Two employees of DB Sicherheit, the railway's security service, were called to intervene.

In connection with the ticket check, a verbal dispute apparently arose, as a result of which two DB Sicherheit employees were called in.

One of the security staff, a 26-year-old Bulgarian national, became involved in a physical struggle with the passenger. During the scuffle, both men fell to the floor. For reasons that remain unexplained, the door of the moving train opened, and the 26-year-old fell out onto the tracks at a point near Ettlingen-Bruchhausen, a district south of Karlsruhe. The speed of the train at the moment of the fall has not yet been determined.

Search and rescue

After the emergency call, a large-scale search was launched along the railway line. The injured man was found approximately two kilometers beyond the next scheduled stop, lying in the track bed with life-threatening injuries. Rescue workers transported him to hospital for urgent treatment. His current condition has not been disclosed.

Arrest and investigation

The 36-year-old suspect was apprehended on board the train by police forces that had been alerted. It remains unclear whether he resisted arrest or sustained any injuries himself, and whether other passengers witnessed the incident. The public prosecutor's office and the police in Karlsruhe are jointly investigating the exact circumstances, including how the train door could open while the train was in motion. The affected train has been taken out of service pending the investigation.

During the scuffle, both participants fell to the floor. At that moment, for reasons not yet known, the door of the moving train opened and the 26-year-old fell out at the level of Ettlingen-Bruchhausen.

Rising violence on German railways

The incident is the latest in a series of attacks on Deutsche Bahn staff. In February 2026, a 36-year-old train attendant died one day after being assaulted by a fare evader during a ticket check on a regional train between Landstuhl and Homburg in Rhineland-Palatinate. That attack sparked nationwide outrage and renewed calls for better protection for railway employees.

Statistics released by the Federal Interior Ministry, in response to a parliamentary question from Left Party MP Dietmar Bartsch, show the scale of the problem. In the first five months of 2026, 1,630 Deutsche Bahn employees and 4,672 federal police officers were threatened, attacked, or otherwise victimised in connection with railway operations. The figures reveal the persistent security challenges faced by those working on Germany's rail network.
