Portuguese police arrest two men for impersonating CTT postal workers in €3,500 parcel scam
The Republican National Guard detained two suspects aged 19 and 26 in Silves after they used counterfeit postal identities and insider knowledge to intercept undelivered packages.
Fraud scheme in Silves
The Republican National Guard (GNR) intercepted and detained two men, aged 19 and 26, outside a CTT postal branch in the Algarve municipality of Silves on Thursday, 1 October 2026. The suspects were apprehended in flagrante delicto while attempting to remove undelivered packages intended for paying customers without settling the required counter fees. At the exact moment of their interception by law enforcement, the pair had taken direct possession of intercepted postal consignments valued at approximately 3,500 euros. One of the detainees was actively wearing an official CTT uniform vest to pass himself off as an active postal worker. The targeted police action was coordinated by local GNR units with operational reinforcement provided by officers from the Armação de Pêra Territorial Post.
Exploitation of internal procedures
Police investigations determined that the 26-year-old suspect had previously worked as an employee of CTT, Portugal's national postal operator. This professional background provided him with specific knowledge regarding internal postal procedures, package dispatch systems, and counter verification protocols. By exploiting this operational familiarity, the duo systematically bypassed regular identity checks, taking custody of parcels under the false premise of transporting them for scheduled customer deliveries.
The GNR outlined the core mechanism of the operation in an official communication issued on Saturday, 3 October 2026.
The suspects posed as CTT employees, with the aim of collecting parcels for supposed deliveries, without making the respective payment.
Property raids in Albufeira
Following the flagrante delicto detentions in Silves, GNR personnel executed formal search warrants across the residential properties of both suspects in the neighboring municipality of Albufeira. The residential searches uncovered a broader collection of stolen goods, consumer merchandise, and illicit substances. Officers successfully recovered four sealed commercial parcels, several travel bags and suitcases, footwear, wristwatches, and assorted garments.
Law enforcement also seized communications hardware and electronic equipment, including two mobile phones, a laptop computer, and an additional CTT uniform vest matching the one worn during the interception. Alongside the stolen merchandise and postal attire, officers found narcotics and distribution paraphernalia, confiscating a precision scale, 10 doses of hashish, one dose of herbal cannabis, and 0.89 grams of MDMA.

Judicial interrogation and bail measures
Following the completion of the residential searches and evidence logging, both men were presented at the Silves Judicial Court for their first judicial interrogation before a magistrate. Authorities submitted the seized goods, narcotic substances, and testimony regarding the fraudulent parcel pickups to support charges of fraud and unauthorized representation.
The presiding judge determined that the suspects would await further legal proceedings under coercive pre-trial conditions. The court ordered both individuals to carry out mandatory periodic check-ins at the local police station located within their respective areas of residence, concluding the initial phase of the GNR enforcement action.
