
Man shot dead in Athens's Exarchia neighbourhood on Saturday evening
A man about 35 years old was killed by gunfire at the junction of Kallidromiou and Benaki streets in the Exarchia district of Athens on Saturday evening, police said.
What happened
Shortly after 9 p.m. on 13 June 2026, passersby heard shots near the corner of Kallidromiou and Benaki streets in Exarchia and alerted the authorities. Officers arriving at the scene found a man who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the head.
The victim
Police described the victim as approximately 35 years old. One report identified him as a man of Arab origin, aged 30–35. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The weapon and evidence
Five shell casings were recovered from the street. The victim had been struck by rounds from a 9 mm handgun, a law enforcement source told local media.
Witness accounts and suspect
Witnesses told police that a single shooter fled on foot in an unknown direction immediately after opening fire. No description of the suspect has been released.
Investigation
The intersection remained cordoned off while crime-scene technicians and detectives worked. Officials have not ruled out a drug-related motive but say all possibilities are still being examined.
