European leaders meet in Finland to discuss Arctic strategy and defense
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo hosts European heads of state and EU officials in Rovaniemi for a two-day meeting focused on economic, environmental, and defense policy in the Arctic.
European heads of state, government leaders, and European Union officials gathered in Rovaniemi, Finland, for a two-day meeting on Arctic strategy convened by Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo. Talks focus on economic policy, environmental matters, and defense issues across the Arctic region. EU representatives at the summit include European Council President António Costa and High Representative Kaja Kallas, alongside government leaders from Germany, Estonia, and Latvia, heads of state from Lithuania and Romania, and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is also attending amid territorial claims on Greenland by US President Donald Trump. While Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and not a member of the European Union, its military-strategic location and mineral resources have drawn increased focus. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently visited the island, announcing closer cooperation and a 200 million euro investment package.
