'Euphoria' Officially Ends After 7 Years: HBO Confirms Season 3 Finale as Series Conclusion, Killing Off Major Characters

After months of speculation, the groundbreaking HBO series 'Euphoria' has officially concluded with its third season. Creator, writer, and director Sam Levinson made the announcement during an appearance on 'Popcast', The New York Times' music podcast, a confirmation that was subsequently verified by HBO to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. The series finale, the 26th episode of the show, aired on 31 May 2026.

In terms of the story that we set out to tell, which is a story about addiction and its consequences, this feels like the end to me.

The news did not come as a complete shock to fans. Lead actress Zendaya had previously stated in interviews, including on The Drew Barrymore Show in April, that she believed the series would wrap up with the third season. Levinson himself had been evasive about a potential fourth season, telling The New York Times before the season three premiere that he writes "every season as if it were the last" and deflecting questions about the future by saying he wanted to spend time with his family.

A bloody and tragic finale

The final episode, titled 'In God We Trust', brought a definitive and tragic end to the story of Rue Bennett, played by Zendaya. The protagonist died after taking Percocet that had been intentionally laced with Fentanyl by drug boss Alamo Brown, portrayed by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. The bloodbath did not stop there; drug boss Laurie, played by Martha Kelly, died by suicide to avoid arrest, and her rival Alamo was shot dead by Rue's sponsor Ali, played by Colman Domingo, in an act of vengeance.

It's a tragic one in the end but it's also the truth. If you are experimenting or taking drugs today, it's very possible it will kill you and I think it was a way of honouring Angus and saying a prayer for the future.

Levinson explicitly connected Rue's fate to a tribute to Angus Cloud, the actor who played Fez and died in 2023 at age 25 from an accidental drug overdose. The finale also served as an emotional homage to Eric Dane, who completed filming his role but passed away from ALS in February 2026, before the season aired.

A cultural phenomenon and star-making machine

Since its debut in June 2019, 'Euphoria' redefined the contemporary teen drama, becoming a global cultural phenomenon. The series followed a group of high school students navigating drugs, sex, identity, trauma, social media, love, and friendship. In its third season, a time jump saw the characters confronting "the virtue of faith, the possibility of redemption, and the problem of evil."

The show's legacy is perhaps most visible in the meteoric rise of its cast. Zendaya, already known from Disney Channel, won two Emmy Awards for her role as Rue and went on to star in the 'Dune' franchise, more Spider-Man films, and Christopher Nolan's upcoming 'The Odyssey'. Jacob Elordi received an Oscar nomination for 'Frankenstein' and entered the James Bond casting rumors, while Sydney Sweeney became one of Hollywood's most sought-after actresses, starring in box office hits like 'Anyone But You'.

A troubled production

Despite its success, the path to the finale was fraught with difficulties. A four-year gap separated the second and third seasons, a delay caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2023 Hollywood writers' strike, and the increasingly packed schedules of its now-famous cast. The production was also plagued by off-screen tragedy and controversy, including accusations of a toxic work environment that also surfaced during the production of Levinson's other HBO series, 'The Idol'.

With the official confirmation, 'Euphoria' concludes its run after seven years, three seasons, and 26 episodes, entering the pantheon of series that left a profound cultural mark without accumulating dozens of seasons.
