Christian Eriksen and VfL Wolfsburg mutually terminate contract after June collapse
VfL Wolfsburg and midfielder Christian Eriksen have agreed to terminate his contract early following an on-pitch defibrillator activation during an international match in June.

German second-tier club VfL Wolfsburg and midfielder Christian Eriksen agreed on 23 September 2026 to terminate the Danish international's contract by mutual consent. The decision brought an early conclusion to an agreement that was contracted to run until 30 June 2027. The 34-year-old playmaker arrived in Wolfsburg on a free transfer in September 2025 after his contract with Manchester United expired. Across the 2025–2026 season, Eriksen made 34 appearances in all competitions for Wolfsburg, scoring three goals and registering 10 assists, though the club was relegated from the Bundesliga to the 2. Bundesliga at the close of the campaign. Eriksen noted that his immediate priority is to be in Denmark with his family.

Match abandonment and medical background
The contract termination follows a medical incident on 7 June 2026 during an international friendly between Denmark and Ukraine held at the Odense Isstadion. In the 65th minute of the contest, Eriksen collapsed to the ground after clutching his chest, prompting match officials to abandon the fixture. The Danish national team medical staff later explained that Eriksen's implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) had discharged an electrical shock to regulate an abnormal heart rhythm. Eriksen was fitted with the subcutaneous defibrillator following his cardiac arrest during Denmark's opening Euro 2020 group match against Finland in Copenhagen in 2021, an episode that sidelined him for six months. Following the episode in Odense, Eriksen regained consciousness quickly, walked off the pitch to an ambulance under his own power, and underwent diagnostic hospital evaluations. In July 2026, Eriksen returned to Denmark to begin an individual rehabilitation programme and has not made a competitive appearance since.

Club leadership reaction and player future
Wolfsburg managing director of sport Dieter Hecking explained that the club chose to grant Eriksen's request without hesitation to give the player full autonomy over his next steps.
It was clear to us that the decision about his future lay with Christian. We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now granted his request to terminate his contract.
The player's situation had also prompted public discussion within the club coaching staff earlier in the season. Following a 5-1 league victory over Darmstadt 98, Wolfsburg head coach Tobias Strobl expressed his personal view on the risks of continuing a playing career.
As a coach I have to be careful not to interfere. But from a human perspective, I would end my career.
Eriksen has made 151 international appearances for Denmark and played for European clubs including Ajax Amsterdam, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, Brentford, and Manchester United. Neither Eriksen nor Wolfsburg specified whether the contract cancellation marks the formal conclusion of his competitive playing career or if he plans to pursue football again after completing his rehabilitation.
