Danish international midfielder Christian Eriksen and German second-tier club VfL Wolfsburg have agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent, the club announced on Wednesday. The decision ends his stay in Germany a year earlier than scheduled, after he originally signed a contract set to run until 30 June 2027. The 34-year-old playmaker requested the release so that he could remain in Denmark with his family following a medical incident during an international match earlier in the summer.

Wolfsburg managing director for sport Dieter Hecking stated that the club readily accommodated the player's wish to cancel the agreement.

“For us, it was clear that the decision about his future had to be Christian's. We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now agreed to his request to terminate the contract.”

June collapse and rehabilitation

Eriksen has not played competitively since 7 June, when he collapsed in the 64th minute of an international friendly between Denmark and Ukraine. During the match, his implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) detected an irregular heart rhythm and delivered a corrective electric shock. Eriksen lost consciousness for a brief moment, but recovered quickly, regained awareness on the pitch, and was able to walk to an ambulance before being taken to a hospital. The match referee subsequently called a halt to the game.

Following medical evaluations, Eriksen returned to Denmark in July to begin a structured rehabilitation programme. The incident occurred five years after Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on 12 June 2021 during Denmark's Euro 2020 opener against Finland at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen. In that 2021 match, his heart stopped for roughly five minutes before he received cardiopulmonary resuscitation from teammate Simon Kjaer and emergency medical personnel, leading to the surgical insertion of his subcutaneous ICD.

Season at Wolfsburg and relegation

Eriksen joined Wolfsburg as a free agent in September 2025 following the expiration of his contract with Manchester United on 30 June 2025. Over the course of the 2025–2026 campaign, he was named team captain and made 34 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and delivering 10 assists.

His on-field contributions were not enough to prevent Wolfsburg from dropping out of the top division. The club lost a two-legged relegation playoff against SC Paderborn in late May 2026, suffering relegation to the 2. Bundesliga for the first time in 29 years after competing in the top flight since 1997.

Career path and future uncertainty

Eriksen, who has made 151 appearances for the Danish national team, has had a club career including spells at Ajax Amsterdam, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, Brentford, and Manchester United. His move to England with Brentford in 2022 followed his release from Inter Milan, because Italian sports regulations ban players with implanted defibrillator devices from participating in professional contact sports.

In his departure statement, Eriksen expressed gratitude to the German club and reiterated that his immediate priority is personal.

“At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I'm pleased that we were able to find a solution together.”

Eriksen noted that his time at Wolfsburg featured many highs and lows, adding that he believes the club is well positioned to return to the Bundesliga. He has not announced whether he plans to continue his playing career in Denmark or retire from professional football.
