Two men seriously injured after scooter hits tree in Embrach crash
A 38-year-old driver and his passenger sustained severe injuries on Saturday evening when their scooter left Winklerstrasse in Embrach and struck a tree.
Collision on Winklerstrasse
A single-vehicle scooter crash in the municipality of Embrach, located in the Canton of Zurich, left two people with severe injuries on the evening of Saturday, 22 August 2026. The incident took place at approximately 17:25 on Winklerstrasse as the vehicle was travelling along the roadway heading toward the neighbouring municipality of Winkel. While attempting to negotiate a right-hand bend, the 38-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle. The scooter drifted across the centre line, crossed over the left edge of the road, and entered the roadside forest, where it collided directly against a tree.
Both the 38-year-old driver and his passenger, also 38 years old, suffered severe injuries in the collision. Civilian first responders who witnessed the aftermath alerted emergency dispatchers. The first Zurich Cantonal Police patrol to reach the location provided emergency medical first aid to both casualties until medical teams and an emergency doctor arrived at the scene.

- First responders alert services and initial police patrol provides emergency aid
- Passenger is taken by ambulance and driver is airlifted by rescue helicopter
- Specialists survey site with laser scanner and prosecutor impounds the scooter
Emergency response and medical evacuation
The scale of the injuries required a rapid response involving multiple regional emergency services. Medical teams deployed from the Spital Bülach rescue service, including an emergency physician, alongside specialized rescue personnel from Schutz & Rettung Zürich. Paramedics and medical personnel provided immediate trauma care at the roadside to stabilise both casualties prior to transport.
Given the severity of the driver's condition, an Alpine Air Ambulance rescue helicopter landed near the scene to transport him directly to a specialist hospital. The 38-year-old passenger received treatment on site before being transported to a hospital by a road ambulance. Officers from the Bülach City Police also deployed to the scene to assist cantonal authorities with the preliminary response and scene management.
Forensic investigation and road closure
The specific cause of the single-vehicle collision remains under investigation. The Zurich Cantonal Police and the Winterthur/Unterland Public Prosecutor's Office opened a joint inquiry to reconstruct the sequence of events. Forensic accident specialists conducted a detailed technical survey of the crash scene, deploying a laser scanner to record the road geometry, taking photographs of the surrounding terrain, and securing physical traces left on the asphalt and foliage.
The responsible public prosecutor issued a formal order to impound and secure the scooter for further technical analysis. To facilitate the forensic work, medical operations, and vehicle recovery by a private towing contractor, authorities closed Winklerstrasse completely in both directions. Traffic units from the Embrachertal and Bachenbülach-Winkel fire departments cordoned off the area and established vehicular detours for local traffic.
