Breel Embolo leaves Stade Rennais to join Atlanta United in €15M MLS transfer
Swiss international forward Breel Embolo has signed a contract through 2030 with MLS club Atlanta United, completing a reported €15 million move from Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais after one season in Brittany.
Transfer terms and negotiation details
Breel Embolo has finalized a move from Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais to Atlanta United in Major League Soccer. The American franchise agreed to pay a transfer fee of approximately €15 million for the 29-year-old Swiss international forward. Embolo signed a contract in the state of Georgia that runs through 2030, bringing an early conclusion to his time in France, where his existing agreement had been scheduled to run until the summer of 2029. The formal announcement on Sunday evening concluded several weeks of transfer discussions following the forward's decision to leave Rennes after the summer World Cup. Earlier in the negotiations, Embolo had initially found terms with Atlanta before rejecting a contract offer deemed inadequate, which briefly put the transfer at risk of collapsing. While clubs in the English Premier League explored the possibility of signing him during that window, Atlanta United and the player subsequently resumed talks and finalized the agreement.
Performance during single campaign at Rennes
The departure ends Embolo's stay at Stade Rennais after just one season in Brittany. The Basel-born forward had arrived at the club in the summer of 2025 following a three-year spell at AS Monaco. During the 2025–2026 campaign, Embolo made 34 appearances across all competitions in Rennes colours, contributing 10 goals and 3 assists. He experienced fluctuating playing time throughout the year, as he was not an automatic starter under either of the team's managers during the season, beginning with Habib Beye and continuing under Franck Haise. Embolo had already decided that he would seek a new destination following his participation in the World Cup, where he helped the Swiss national team advance to the quarter-finals on American soil.

Fourth league across senior club career
Joining Atlanta United brings Embolo to the fourth domestic top flight of his professional club career. He began his senior career in the Swiss Super League with FC Basel before spending six years in the German Bundesliga, divided equally into three seasons at FC Schalke 04 and three seasons at Borussia Mönchengladbach. He followed that with four seasons in French Ligue 1, spending three years at Monaco and one year at Rennes. His new club, Atlanta United, was established in 2015 and has previously won both the MLS Cup and the US Open Cup. The team enters Sunday night's fixture occupying last place in the MLS Eastern Conference standings, with the league publicly welcoming the forward as a high-profile addition to the competition.
Swiss national team standing under Murat Yakin
The move to the United States carries potential consequences for Embolo's international status. Embolo has earned 92 senior caps and scored 26 goals for the Swiss national team, establishing himself as an experienced attacker in the squad. However, Switzerland national team manager Murat Yakin has maintained a consistent selection preference for players who compete within Europe's top five domestic leagues. By trading Ligue 1 for Major League Soccer, Embolo moves outside that traditional European selection pool, while Atlanta United will look to integrate their new forward as they attempt to climb out of the bottom position in the Eastern Conference.
