In brief
Instagram released Edits for macOS on 5 November 2026, adding a desktop editor to the mobile app that launched in early 2025.
The desktop app offers a multi-track timeline, keyframes, audio waveforms, color wheels, curves and log conversions, with 4K watermark-free export.
Edits Desktop exposes an MCP for its tools, so agents such as Meta's Muse can make rough cuts, according to Matthew Simari of Instagram.

What launched on Thursday
Instagram released Edits for macOS on Thursday, 5 November 2026, moving its free short-form video editor from phones to desktop. The company says the desktop version is built for bigger projects that are hard to manage on a phone, where a larger screen, a mouse and a keyboard help with fine cuts. TechCrunch reports that the launch puts Edits in more direct competition with ByteDance's CapCut, which has been available on desktop for Windows and Mac since 2021. Meta released Edits in early 2025 to compete with CapCut, and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on the company's most recent earnings call that the app has more than 50 million active users. The company also says the desktop app suits creators who want more control over longer, widescreen videos.
Editing tools and publishing
Edits for desktop adds a full multi-track timeline, keyframes for dynamic transitions, and precise audio waveforms for beat-accurate cuts. Color wheels, curves and log conversions give finished videos a graded look, and users can import their own LUTs and font files. Keyboard shortcuts can be customised or carried over from another editor, and the licensed audio library is available inside the app. Meta describes the new editor in a blog post:
“Our new desktop editor brings a full multi-track timeline, keyframes for dynamic transitions, and precise audio waveforms for beat-accurate cuts.”
The app exports 4K video without a watermark in horizontal and vertical formats. Creators can publish straight to Instagram with tagging, location and trial reels, which removes the step of moving a file to a phone before posting. Instagram also offers unlimited automatic captions in multiple languages at no cost, along with hundreds of sound and video effects.
AI agents and the Mac-only limit
Matthew Simari, head of product management for Edits, told The Verge that creators had heavily requested a desktop version and that AI plans were also a factor. The desktop app ships an MCP for all its tools, so a user can connect an agent of their choice, including Meta's Muse agent, to make a rough cut before opening the project in Edits. Simari said users can move back and forth between agentic and manual editing. Instagram added an AI creative assistant to the mobile Edits app in September 2026, which uses account data such as views and retention. The desktop app is available only on macOS, with no Windows or Linux version, and a project cannot yet be edited across mobile and desktop.
Creators and what comes next
Brett Westervelt, head of Edits, wrote in a blog post that creators keep describing the same moment:
“A lot of creators have described the same moment to us: a project gets too big for your phone.”
Instagram says the desktop version also works for personal projects, since exports can be shared to any platform. The company plans weekly updates to the desktop editor and is working on editing one project across desktop and mobile. It also says it will keep growing the mobile app for the more than 50 million creators who use it. Users are asked for feedback to help shape future changes.
