Dyson launches CameraJet smart toothbrush with optical flossing camera for $499

Optical tracking and flossing mechanics

Dyson unveiled the CameraJet electric toothbrush at a presentation in Paris on the morning of 1 September 2026. The device incorporates a 100,000-pixel macro lens camera situated beneath the brush bristles and protected by a plastic cap. An accompanying stroboscopic light operates at 257 Hz, flashing independently of the brush head movement to stabilize the image feed. An onboard machine-learning algorithm called Gap Optical Targeting processes 28 live frames per second to recognize interdental spaces within 100 milliseconds. Once an interdental space is detected, an internal diaphragm pump delivers a targeted, conical blast of mouthwash directly into the gap. The brush head vibrates at nearly 1,000 oscillations per second with variable sonic angles to keep bristles moving freely without jamming against tooth surfaces.

By combining a camera, machine learning, precision fluid dynamics, advanced brushing technologies, connectivity and Wifi, Dyson CameraJet introduces an entirely new way to keep your mouth healthy.

Research and engineering history

The development of the CameraJet spanned six years and engaged 661 engineers across company facilities. Dyson filed 38 patents and wrote 16 million lines of code during the creation of the hardware and targeting software. The software model was trained on 470,000 dental images to allow the camera to distinguish between tooth enamel and adjacent spaces. Product testing took place at the Dyson Oral Care Lab in Singapore, where researchers studied brushing patterns and device interaction among thousands of test subjects. To evaluate plaque removal efficiency, engineers used a synthetic plaque substitute created during a five-year collaboration with the dentistry faculty at the National University of Singapore.

User habits and oral health testing

Dyson directed its engineering focus toward interdental cleaning after internal research found that 90% of people admit they do not floss as regularly as dentists advise. Company studies also revealed that the average person brushes for only 45 seconds per session, well below the standard two-minute professional guidance. Laboratory trials showed that conventional narrow water jets tended to pierce through plaque deposits without lifting them away from the tooth surface. Dyson replaced that narrow stream with a wider conical spray that covers more surface area at lower operating pressure. The handle contains an integrated 12.5-milliliter fluid reservoir equipped with an expanding internal balloon that prevents air bubbles and maintains steady pressure at any angle.

We wanted to solve three fundamental problems: how to see those gaps, remove plaque, how to improve cleaning performance while brushing.

Connectivity and retail availability

The CameraJet links to smartphones through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, allowing users to view a live video feed of their brushing session on the MyDyson application. The system operates as a live stream without recording or archiving video footage either locally on the handle or remotely on cloud servers. Replaceable brush heads feature dual bristle textures, using firm inner bristles for surface stains and softer outer bristles along the gumline. Each head contains an embedded RFID tag that tracks completed cleaning cycles to notify users when replacement is necessary. The product launched on 1 September 2026 in Ceramic Ultra Blue and Ceramic Pink color options. Retail pricing is set at $499 in the United States, 479 euros in Europe, and 419.99 pounds in the United Kingdom, with dedicated toothpaste and mouthwash refills priced at 8.50 pounds each.
