Dutch Porsche driver clocked at 235 km/h on A3, pays €10,000 after positive THC test

The incident

A 23-year-old man from the Netherlands drove a Porsche at more than 235 km/h on the A3 motorway near Montabaur on Tuesday, 4 August 2026. The midday traffic was heavy, and the driver tailgated a civilian police patrol car with what officers described as a clearly insufficient safety distance. He then repeatedly overtook on the right, a prohibited manoeuvre, using every gap and cutting back in immediately in front of other vehicles.

Police pursuit

A civilian patrol car equipped with a calibrated speedometer gave chase at 230 km/h, but the Porsche continued to pull away. Police later stated that, based on the investigation so far, it was only through fortunate circumstances that no collision occurred. The driver was eventually stopped.

Drug test and consequences

During the check, officers found indications of drug use. A preliminary test returned positive for THC, and a blood sample was taken. The driver told police that he runs a coffeeshop in Eindhoven together with his father and that he consumes cannabis regularly for professional reasons.

Because he resides abroad and did not provide any information about his income, a security deposit of €10,000 was imposed and paid on the spot. His driving licence was seized. The investigation into suspected illegal motor vehicle racing and endangering road traffic is ongoing. Police added that at no point did the driver show any insight into his misconduct.

Cannabis has been partially legal in Germany for around two years. The law has not triggered a surge in consumption, and according to one report the black market has been partially pushed back. The incident on the A3, however, involves a foreign national who claimed professional use in the Netherlands, where coffeeshops operate under a tolerance policy.
