Detroit Pistons sign center Jalen Duren to five-year, $200 million contract extension
The Detroit Pistons finalized a five-year contract extension worth $200 million with restricted free agent center Jalen Duren after dropping a disputed weight clause from the agreement.
Official announcement and contract terms
The Detroit Pistons officially announced a contract extension with center Jalen Duren on Saturday. While team executives did not publish financial terms in their formal release, reporting from ESPN and The Athletic established that the agreement spans five seasons and is worth a total of $200 million. The agreement resolves four and a half months of uncertainty regarding the 22-year-old restricted free agent. Based on an average annual value of $40 million, Duren becomes the eighth-highest-paid center in the NBA, trailing players such as Nikola Jokic at $59 million, Anthony Davis at $58.5 million, and Joel Embiid at $57.9 million.

Weight clause removal and negotiations
Contract discussions between the franchise and Duren had persisted without a rookie-scale extension since the previous offseason. In recent negotiations, Detroit presented the $200 million framework but attached a clause mandating regular physical weight monitoring for the 208-centimetre, 113-kilogram center. Duren rejected the inclusion of the condition, leading the team to withdraw the clause before finalizing terms on Thursday night. Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff spoke with the squad on Friday and rejected suggestions of tension between the player, his teammates, and the front office.
I don't know where that came from. It's negotiation, it's business, but there's never been any bitterness between the group and how we feel about him and I know how he feels about us.
Regular season performance and playoff decline
The long-term commitment follows a season where Detroit recorded a 60-22 record to secure the best regular season record in the Eastern Conference. Duren earned selections to both the All-Star Game and the All-NBA Third Team while registering career-high averages of 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per contest. During the postseason, his production fell to 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game as Detroit was eliminated in seven games by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Across his entire four-year NBA career since being selected 13th overall in the 2022 draft, Duren has recorded career averages of 13.5 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists.
He's been an important part of our success over the last two seasons, and we've seen tremendous growth in his game. Jalen has accomplished a great deal at a young age, and we believe his best basketball is still ahead of him. We're proud of the work he's put in and look forward to his continued growth and impact on our team.
Salary cap breakdown and roster foundation
The extension secures Duren as a long-term foundation player alongside teammates Cade Cunningham and Ausar Thompson, who previously signed multi-year extensions with the franchise. Under the 2026-27 NBA salary cap of $164.9 million, Duren's $40 million average compensation represents 24.3% of Detroit's total payroll room. Projections for the 2027-28 salary cap of $174 million place his cap hit at approximately 23%, with the percentage expected to decrease over the life of the deal. Finalizing the agreement also avoids the scenario where Duren would have accepted a one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer containing a no-trade clause.
