Three armed men stormed a residential property in the township of KwaMakhutha, located south of the coastal city of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal province, late on Tuesday evening. The assailants targeted a gathering where 14 people had assembled inside the house for a party. According to provincial officials and police reports, the armed men entered the building just before 23:00 and opened fire on the attendees. The attackers discharged multiple rounds at the group before fleeing the property into the surrounding neighborhood.
Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Thamsanqa Ntuli confirmed the timing and circumstances of the assault in statements given to news agencies on Wednesday morning.
The victims, including a pregnant woman, were gathered in a house shortly before 23:00, when armed attackers reportedly entered the house and opened fire.
Casualties and scene of the shooting
Emergency services and police personnel dispatched to the scene confirmed that 10 people died inside the home from gunshot wounds. The deceased victims at the scene included the single female guest, who investigators stated was believed to be pregnant, along with nine men. Paramedics evacuated four other individuals with severe gunshot injuries to local medical facilities for urgent treatment. One of the hospitalized victims died shortly after arrival, bringing the confirmed death toll to 11. Three surviving guests remain under medical care in hospital. Before escaping the area, the gunmen also set fire to a motor vehicle belonging to one of the victims, leaving the burnt-out car outside the residence as documented by local broadcast coverage.
