Man dies after Dublin city centre stabbing; separate prison death under investigation

A man in his 40s was stabbed on North Great Charles Street in Dublin 1 on Monday, August 10, between 10pm and 10:30pm. He was taken by ambulance to the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, where he passed away on Friday, August 14. The office of the Coroner and the State Pathologist have been notified, and a post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course.

A woman in her 20s has been charged in connection with the assault. She appeared before Court 2 of the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin on Wednesday, August 12, and was refused bail. She has been remanded in custody to appear again the following week.

A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation, and an incident room has been established at Mountjoy Garda Station. A Family Liaison Officer has also been appointed to the family of the deceased.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. They are particularly seeking road users or pedestrians who were in the North Great Charles Street area between 10pm and 10:30pm on Monday, August 10, and who may have camera footage, including dash-cam recordings. Delivery and taxi drivers operating in the area at the time are specifically asked to check for any footage showing suspicious activity. Death in custody at Wheatfield Prison

Separately, a prisoner died after being stabbed in his cell at Wheatfield Prison on Thursday, August 13. Brendan Gahan, aged 39, from Tallaght, was serving a sentence for drugs offences. He was stabbed in the back of the head in his cell on the 8G landing at around 10pm.

Prison officers responded to a "commotion" in the cell, according to sources. When they entered, they found Gahan with a deep cut to the back of his head. Gardaí were called and the suspect was taken away for questioning. The cell was declared a crime scene ahead of a full forensic examination.

A man in his 40s has been arrested in connection with the death and is detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in Dublin. A Senior Investigating Officer has been assigned, and a Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to support Gahan's family. The Garda National Technical Bureau has been requested to assist with the investigation.

The cause of death will be determined by the Coroner's Office. A post-mortem will be carried out.
