While fungi possess flexible underground networks that can endure droughts without dying, Lehr expressed little optimism for the immediate Rhine-Main region unless weather patterns shift substantially.

The visible mushrooms collected by foragers represent only the reproductive fruiting bodies of a subterranean organism. The main living structure is the mycelium, an extensive underground network of fungal threads that interacts directly with tree roots. Dr. Till Panter, an expert based in Rheinhessen, noted that fungi suffer under severe drought even more than forest trees. Species such as porcini and chanterelles live in mycorrhizal symbiosis with host trees, meaning that drought-stressed trees diminish the energy and nutrients available to their fungal partners.
Fruiting body formation requires two distinct environmental conditions to align. First, persistently low temperatures, particularly cold nights, act as the biological trigger that prompts the mycelium to initiate fruiting. Second, the ground must maintain continuous moisture so the nascent structures can swell and push through the surface. Once both cold nights and soaking rains arrive, the mycelium still requires up to two weeks to produce harvestable mushrooms.
