Russian drone barrage kills eight in Ukraine as strikes ignite Moscow oil refinery

Fatalities and damage across Ukrainian regions

Russian forces conducted an overnight drone assault across multiple regions of Ukraine on the night of 20 September 2026, leaving eight people dead and five others injured. In Kyiv Oblast, four civilians lost their lives after strikes hit residential communities. A mother and her two three-year-old children died when a drone struck a private house, while an injured child later died in hospital after sustaining wounds in the Vyshhorod district. Across five administrative districts within Kyiv Oblast, emergency services recorded damage to 31 separate buildings and sites.

Tymur Tkachenko, the head of the Kyiv Oblast military administration, confirmed the updated fatality count through official statements on the Telegram messaging platform.

A child who was injured in an enemy attack in the Vyshhorod district died in hospital. This brings the death toll in Kyiv Oblast to four, three children and one woman.

In Sumy Oblast, the National Police of Ukraine confirmed that Russian strikes killed four people and wounded five others. Further to the west, in Vinnytsia Oblast, an aerial strike hit and damaged a railway infrastructure facility, according to Natalia Zabolotna, the head of the regional military administration.

Air defense interceptions and jet drone encounters

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russian forces launched 138 Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicles during the overnight bombardment. Approximately half of the incoming aircraft were jet-powered models capable of higher flight speeds. Ukrainian air defense units intercepted and destroyed 101 drones, including Shahed, Gerber, and other unspecified models. Military authorities registered impacts from incoming aerial weapons at 17 locations, while falling wreckage from shot-down drones came down in five locations.

The increasing use of jet-powered systems has prompted new counter-tactics. President Volodymyr Zelensky recently announced the deployment of a new Ukrainian interceptor drone designed specifically to neutralize high-speed Russian unmanned aircraft. On Saturday, this Ukrainian interceptor achieved its first confirmed hit against a Russian Geran-5 drone, representing a next-generation system recently introduced into combat.

Ukrainian drone strikes on Moscow and oil refinery fire

Ukrainian forces launched reciprocal drone operations deep into Russian territory, targeting critical industrial and municipal sites in the capital region. An aerial strike hit an oil refinery inside the city of Moscow, triggering a fire across the processing facility. Andrey Vorobyov, the governor of Moscow Oblast, reported that two people were killed as a result of the Ukrainian drone strikes within the surrounding region.

Russian air defense units were active across multiple sectors over the weekend. The Mayor of Moscow stated that Russian forces had shot down more than 1,600 drones across the country since Saturday, with 450 of those unmanned aircraft intercepted while heading directly toward Moscow.

Emergency response teams in both Ukraine and Russia worked through Sunday morning to extinguish fires and assess structural destruction at energy facilities, transport hubs, and residential neighbourhoods.
