Explosion near the Portuguese Embassy

A Russian drone crashed and exploded approximately 300 metres from the Embassy of Portugal in Kyiv on 27 August 2026. The blast caused physical damage to nearby buildings and shattered windows in the surrounding area, but Portuguese authorities confirmed that all diplomatic staff were safe and uninjured. Portugal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs released an official statement on social media condemning the strike in the Ukrainian capital. The ministry stated that the explosion reflected the brutality of Russian military actions against Ukraine and the constant dangers facing the civilian population.

Diplomatic condemnation and international law

Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel addressed journalists to condemn the strike, describing the incident near the diplomatic mission as unacceptable. Rangel stated that although no personnel sustained injuries, the detonation had a heavy impact on both the physical embassy building and the people working inside at the time. He pointed out that this was not the first time an attack had landed in the immediate vicinity of Portugal's diplomatic representation in Kyiv. Rangel argued that strikes affecting diplomatic missions represent a direct breach of international standards governing warfare.

We are obviously concerned because, when diplomatic facilities are hit, it means that the level of non-compliance with international rules of war is total. Therefore, obviously, the Russian Federation deserves a severe condemnation.

Waves of strikes across Kyiv

The detonation near the embassy formed part of a prolonged aerial assault that began after nightfall on Wednesday and continued throughout Thursday morning. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha confirmed that Russian forces launched a coordinated barrage against ports, grain storage silos, energy infrastructure, and manufacturing sites.

Overnight, Russia carried out a massive attack against Ukraine, targeting ports, grain silos, energy, industry, and other infrastructure with ballistic and hypersonic missiles and combat drones.

Kyiv residents travelled to work under repeated air raid sirens and the sounds of air defence units intercepting incoming jet-powered drones arriving in multiple waves. The overnight assault across the country included 258 drones alongside an unspecified number of ballistic and hypersonic missiles. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that falling debris caused damage across at least two districts, damaging a school building and shattering the windows of a local health centre. On the outskirts of Kyiv, air strikes damaged commercial warehouses and private residences, leaving two people injured.

Casualties and destruction in other regions

The multi-region bombardment resulted in at least one fatality and ten injuries across several Ukrainian regions. In the northeastern city of Kharkiv, an attack at lunchtime struck a commercial shopping centre, killing one person and injuring two others, according to regional governor Oleh Syniehubov. Missile strikes also hit industrial facilities in Kryvyi Rih, a steel and mining centre and the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelensky, where regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha confirmed three injuries. In the southern city of Zaporizhia, regional head Ivan Fedorov reported three additional injuries after strikes hit an unspecified production facility.

In the central Poltava region, air attacks struck industrial installations and an electrical power plant, cutting off electricity to seven localities. Further south in the Odessa region, an aerial bombardment lasting several hours struck transport infrastructure, an educational institution, and residential buildings.
